    Description

Title: Veterinarian / Animal Health Expert Traveling Volunteer

This position is open to any Veterinarian or Animal Health Expert (including final-year students) who is willing to travel with VfAW to Tanzania to help implement our animal-welfare projects on the ground.

About Voices for Animal Welfare (VfAW)

Voices for Animal Welfare (VfAW) is an international NGO bridging Europe and Africa to give a voice to animals and empower communities. Through legal advocacy, education, veterinary support, and the arts, we unite volunteers, experts, and advocates to create sustainable, culturally inclusive change in animal welfare. Our global team shares one mission: a more humane world for animals and people.

    Role Summary

    Type: 100% volunteer, unpaid

Hours & Time Off: Up to 25 hours/week; flexibility required; two fixed days off per week

Location: Arusha, Tanzania (open to international applicants)

Start: January 2026 (travel timing may vary; shorter stays, staggered rotations, and remote collaboration before/after the field period are possible) We recruit traveling volunteers year-round; our current priority is candidates who can travel between January and May 2026.

Language: Proficiency in English is required.

Commitment: Minimum 1 month (ideally 3 months)

Costs: Approx. €300/month to cover accommodation, food, and local transport. No fees are charged by the NGO for this role. Flights and visa are at your own expense. Subject to grant approval, accommodation may be covered (reducing your monthly costs). Tanzania’s cost of living is low compared to Europe, and affordable flight options are available.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist the team in preparing teaching materials.
    • Teach in schools and community settings about animal welfare and basic veterinary practices.
    • Help organize in-person events.
    • Be willing to continue collaborating with VfAW after your stay (remote contributions welcome).

Note: This is a teaching-focused position. No surgery will be performed.

    What You Bring

    • Flexibility and a proactive mindset; comfortable with last-minute changes and working in a diverse, cross-cultural team.
    • Degree or training in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Health, or a related field (final-year students welcome).
    • Practical experience in animal care, clinical practice, or fieldwork, mainly with farm animals and pets; wildlife experience is a plus.
    • Teaching or training experience.
    • Strong communication skills and cultural adaptability.
    • Alignment with VfAW’s mission to advance humane, community-led animal welfare.

    What You’ll Gain

    • Meaningful impact with an international NGO.
    • Cross-regional collaboration (Africa–Europe).
    • Professional growth, field experience, and global networking opportunities.

    Safety & Duty of Care

VfAW is committed to your wellbeing. Before travel, volunteers receive a safety and cultural orientation, including local context, health guidance, emergency procedures, and key contacts. On arrival, you’ll have an in-country briefing and ongoing coordination support. We also provide guidance on insurance, vaccinations, and registration requirements and maintain clear protocols for incident reporting and emergency response.
