Hey everyone! We are collaborating with the Burrillville Historical & Preservation Society to host cemetery clean-ups throughout the spring/summer/fall months! This is a recurring event that can be done at ANY time! Are you looking for community service hours that need to be fulfilled, but you can't find a place to get them done, or are you simply looking to give back to your community? If you love being outdoors and don't mind getting your hands dirty than this is the right opportunity for you!
There are some scheduled clean-ups throughout the year, but if you are in need of hours, this is a great opportunity to get out and get them done ASAP!
What to know about this opportunity:
-If you need hours by a certain date, you can reach out to us via Idealist with that information, and we can give you the plot #s and the locations to the historical cemeteries, including the details on where to park and remove the leaves. Upon arrival, you take a picture of the cemetery numbered sign. Then, once the cleaning is done, a member of the DPNA or the Burrillville Historical Society will visit the site to confirm the work has been done (or confirm via photos), and they will either give you a community service paper on arrival or via USPS (whatever works for you!)
-You will be clearing out leaves, debris, or trash ONLY! You will not be touching the headstones, no cleaning or moving them, even if you think they need to be fixed. That is the job for the Historical Society members to handle.
-Please remember that these are historical landmarks and people's loved ones. There is no foul play allowed, so please remain respectful of the space!
What you need to bring:
-Dress for the appropriate weather conditions!
-Bring plenty of water and a lunch if you plan to be more than a few hours (some cemeteries can take ALL day to clean up!)
-Rakes, wheelbarrows, tarps (for leaf removal), weed whackers, leaf blowers, bags (always bring a bag for trash), loppers, and any safety gear you may need (such as safety glasses or ear protection)
The directions vary depending on the location of the cemetery
