About AfriGenetry Link
AfriGenetry Link is a global nonprofit building the world's first community-centered African genomic health ecosystem, reconnecting people of African descent to their identity, heritage, and health through DNA education across the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, and Brazil. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Dallas, Texas, with active institutional discussions in Kenya and Nigeria and programs reaching participants across multiple states and countries.
About this role
AfriGenetry Link is at a critical moment. We have a powerful mission, a growing global team, active programs, and a founder story that belongs to the world. What we are missing is the strategic communications leadership to make that happen consistently. The Head of Communications and Marketing is the person who builds and executes the communications infrastructure that turns AGL's story into a movement.
This is a leadership volunteer role. You are not just creating content. You are building a communications department from the ground up, managing a small team, setting strategy, and ensuring that every platform, every message, and every piece of content reflects the power and professionalism of what AGL is building.
What will you own
- Overall communications strategy, defining how AGL shows up across all platforms and audiences, including funders, partners, community members, students, and diaspora communities
- Brand management, ensuring consistency in AGL's voice, visual identity, and messaging across all channels
- Managing and directing the Content and Social Media Lead, setting the weekly content calendar, reviewing content before it goes live, and coaching the team on storytelling quality
- Managing and directing the SEO and Growth Lead — aligning blog and website content with organizational priorities and reviewing performance monthly
- Media and public relations, drafting and distributing press releases for major milestones, responding to media inquiries, and proactively pitching AGL's story to journalists and podcasters in the African diaspora, health equity, and genomics spaces.
- Website and content strategy — ensuring the website accurately reflects AGL's current programs and priorities and is updated regularly
- Newsletter strategy — overseeing the monthly newsletter so it is compelling, on-brand, and delivered consistently
- Event communications — managing all promotional materials, social media coverage, and post-event documentation for AGL's campus tour and community pop-up events in Dallas
- Funder and partner communications support — reviewing all external-facing documents and emails for brand consistency and professional quality
What we are looking for
- Proven experience in communications, marketing, or public relations; nonprofit, corporate, or agency background, all considered
- Strong strategic thinking: you can build a communications plan, not just execute tasks
- Experience managing or mentoring a small team
- Excellent writing skills: you can write everything from a press release to an Instagram caption and know the difference
- Understanding of how to build an audience and grow engagement across digital platforms
- Passionate about African heritage, health equity, diaspora reconnection, or community health
- Highly reliable — you deliver on time, communicate proactively, and lead by example.
What you will gain
- The opportunity to build a communications department for one of the most ambitious African health equity nonprofits in the world
- Direct access to and mentorship from the founder, a PMP-certified public health professional and experienced project manager
- Portfolio of strategic communications work at a global nonprofit operating across four continents
- A reference letter from the Executive Director upon successful completion
- First consideration for the paid Communications Director role as AGL secures funding
- Connection to AGL's growing global network across Africa, the US, the Caribbean, and Brazil
