    Description

    Marketing/Communications Volunteer for People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos

Use your communications skills to support a meaningful mission. People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos seeks a creative, organized volunteer to help strengthen our visibility, engage new audiences, and build support for our work.

Entering our 55th year, we connect lives through reading and discussing short stories in English and Spanish. Our free programs reach underserved communities through senior centers, correctional facilities, supportive housing, libraries, and community organizations.

Working directly with our Executive Director, you’ll help manage marketing, public relations, email communications, and social media. You’ll also have opportunities to experience our mission firsthand and capture the moments that help others understand its impact.

    Responsibilities

    • Create and schedule email newsletters, appeals, and event announcements using Constant Contact.
    • Develop engaging content for Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
    • Design promotional graphics and materials using Canva.
    • Draft press releases, media pitches, and community calendar listings.
    • Maintain media contacts and help secure coverage of programs and events.
    • Occasionally visit program sites and attend introductory “Try It” sessions and special events, including our annual Notable Words literary event.
    • Occasionally take photographs, capture short videos, and record participant and supporter testimonials, with appropriate consent and in accordance with site policies.
    • Coordinate a communications calendar and track basic campaign results.
    • Suggest fresh approaches to reach supporters, volunteers, participants, and younger audiences.

    Qualifications

    • Hands-on experience with Constant Contact, Canva, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, with the ability to use these tools independently.
    • Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills.
    • Comfort taking photographs and creating and editing short videos.
    • Familiarity with marketing and public relations practices; media outreach experience is a plus.
    • Ability to take initiative, meet deadlines, and follow projects through to completion.
    • Warmth, sensitivity, and respect when interacting with people from varied backgrounds and sharing their experiences.
    • A background or studies in marketing, public relations, communications, English, literature, or a related field.
    • Familiarity with Spanish is a plus.

College students, recent graduates, and experienced professionals are welcome. Relevant experience may come from employment, volunteer work, campus organizations, or independent projects.

    What we offer

Meaningful work, a collaborative relationship with our Executive Director, and opportunities to contribute ideas, build your portfolio, and gain nonprofit experience. Through occasional program visits and events, you’ll meet people involved in our work and see the connections your communications help make possible.

We provide organizational background, source materials, direction, and final content approval.

Time commitment: Approximately 4–6 hours per week, with flexible scheduling and occasional attendance at programs and events arranged well in advance. We hope to welcome an ongoing volunteer who will grow with our organization.

Location: Primarily remote within New Jersey. Applicants must be able to travel occasionally to our Princeton office, program sites, and events. We’ll coordinate visits around program schedules, site permissions, and your availability.

Compensation: This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. All travel mileage will be reimbursed. Students seeking internship experience are welcome.
