Volunteer Digital Communications & Social Media Coordinator (Toxic Exposure in Military Families)

About VFEA

Veteran Families for Education and Awareness (VFEA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about toxic exposures affecting military service members, veterans, and their families.

Two of our current major focus areas are:

• Toxic exposures associated with the former Shinkampo Incinerator at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan
• Military aviation-related cancers affecting aircrew, maintainers, and other aviation personnel

We are seeking a volunteer to help expand the reach of VFEA’s research, news, resources, and volunteer opportunities through social media and other digital communications.

About the role

VFEA is seeking a Volunteer Digital Communications & Social Media Coordinator to help us share accurate, accessible information with military families, veterans, researchers, journalists, policymakers, and the public.

This is a flexible, collaborative role for someone who enjoys translating important work into clear digital content and helping a small nonprofit develop a more consistent online presence.

The volunteer will work with VFEA Board members, writers, and other volunteers to promote approved articles, research updates, historical records, educational resources, volunteer opportunities, and organizational news.

What you may help with

Depending on your interests and experience, you may:

• Help create a realistic monthly social-media and digital-content calendar.
• Adapt VFEA news articles, research updates, historical records, and organizational announcements into concise posts for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other appropriate platforms.
• Schedule and publish approved content.
• Help promote new articles, volunteer opportunities, email sign-ups, donations, educational resources, and ways for community members to connect with VFEA.
• Suggest accessible post formats, such as short updates, quote graphics, carousels, polls, short videos, or article highlights.
• Help maintain a consistent voice and visual identity across VFEA’s digital channels.
• Track basic performance measures such as reach, engagement, link clicks, website traffic, newsletter sign-ups, and volunteer inquiries.
• Recommend practical adjustments based on what is working.
• Coordinate with VFEA writers and graphic-design volunteers to help turn research and news content into engaging public-facing materials.

Who we are seeking

We welcome applicants with experience or interest in:

• Social-media management or digital communications.
• Content strategy, content calendars, or community outreach.
• Nonprofit, public-health, environmental-health, military, veteran, research, or mission-driven communications.
• Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, MailerLite, Squarespace, Canva, or similar tools.
• Writing concise, accurate content for a public audience.
• Using analytics to improve engagement and reach.

Experience with military or veterans’ issues, toxic exposures, environmental health, or public education is helpful but not required.

We are especially interested in someone who can work collaboratively, communicate clearly, respect scientific uncertainty, and help make complex information understandable without oversimplifying it.

Scope

This role does not require the volunteer to be available every day, respond to all public messages, produce all graphics or videos, serve as a spokesperson, provide medical or legal advice, or independently approve content.

VFEA will provide background materials, topic ideas, access as needed, and editorial review. All public-facing content will be reviewed and approved by VFEA before publication.
