    Description

    Hunger Fighter

We have many ways to make a lasting impact on our communities. We are always

looking for groups and individuals willing to help us make a difference. Volunteer

opportunities are typically Monday through Friday, either in the morning or afternoon

and range from 2-3 hours long. All volunteer opportunities require volunteers to wear

close-toed shoes as well as clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. Our three main

opportunities are at the Warehouse, Community Kitchen, and at Mobile Markets.

Warehouse opportunities are a great way to see how we can distribute food to other

organizations and directly to our neighbors. In the warehouse, volunteers help us sort

through donations, bag perishables and other food items, as well as pack boxes of shelf

stable items for distribution. Shifts are generally Monday-Friday 8:30-11:00am or 12:30

3:00pm. These activities can range in size from 4 to 30 volunteers. Our warehouse is

located at 117 Morgan Dr. Sinking Spring, PA 19608.

Our brand-new Community Kitchen offers a tangible way to see our process from start

to finish. Volunteers help our chefs both prep food as well as package it in heat-then-eat

trays for low-income seniors. Activities can range from chopping, labeling, scooping or

shredding, just as an example. Currently, volunteer shifts require between 5 to 12

volunteers. Shifts are generally Monday-Friday 9:30-12:00pm or 1:00-3:30pm. Our

Community Kitchen is located next to the Goggleworks building in downtown Reading at

229 Washington St., Reading PA 19601.

Mobile Markets were brought to life by looking at neighborhoods with low accessibility to

quality nutritious foods and a higher risk of financial instability. With over 25 different

locations in Schuylkill and Berks county, we serve thousands of families every week.

Volunteers help create an assembly line of tables to place various food items on from

pallets. From there, volunteers typically distribute 1-3 items per family that come

through either in a drive-thru or walk-up setting. Mobile Markets are set up in the

neighborhood where we are impacting and are held outdoors. Depending on how many

families are being served, Mobile Markets require anywhere from 12 to 30 volunteers.

Distribution times in Berks County are generally from 1:00-3:00pm, and in Schuylkill

from 11:00am-1:00pm. Mobiles are held Monday-Friday and on every other Saturday (1

in Berks county, 1 in Schuylkill.)
