Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, and community. As MAP grows, clear, consistent communication becomes essential to how the organization is understood, trusted, and supported.

About PromisePublic | Public Affairs, Advocacy & Engagement

PromisePublic is MAP’s public-facing division responsible for communications, advocacy, public engagement, and institutional voice. The division ensures that MAP communicates with clarity, integrity, and alignment—across all platforms, audiences, and stakeholders.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Communications Manager to centralize and align messaging across MAP’s communication ecosystem—including blog, podcast, campaigns, and public-facing materials.

This role ensures that all communications reflect a unified voice, consistent messaging, and strategic clarity—connecting storytelling, public engagement, and advocacy into one coherent system.

This is a coordination and strategy role that reduces fragmentation and strengthens organizational communication.

    Key Responsibilities

    Messaging Strategy & Alignment

    • Develop and maintain a unified messaging framework across all platforms
    • Ensure consistency in tone, language, and narrative across blog, podcast, and campaigns
    • Align communications with MAP’s mission, values, and advocacy priorities

    Content Coordination & Oversight

    • Coordinate across PromisePress, PromisePod, and PromiseBrands to align content output
    • Maintain a centralized content calendar and communication priorities
    • Ensure timely and cohesive rollout of content and campaigns

    Public Voice & External Communications

    • Ensure consistency across external communications, including public statements, outreach, and campaigns
    • Support development of messaging for partnerships, advocacy, and public engagement efforts
    • Align messaging with policy and systems change initiatives

    Quality & Consistency Assurance

    • Review communications for clarity, consistency, and alignment
    • Support teams in refining messaging and strengthening narrative cohesion
    • Ensure communications reflect dignity-centered, trauma-informed language

    Systems & Process Development

    • Build and maintain systems for communication workflows and approvals
    • Reduce duplication, gaps, and inconsistencies across teams
    • Support documentation of messaging guidelines and standards

    Cross-Team Collaboration

    • Work closely with content, advocacy, partnerships, and program teams
    • Align communication efforts with organizational priorities and timelines
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
    • Experience in communications, public affairs, or content strategy
    • Ability to manage multiple content streams and align messaging
    • Strong organizational and strategic thinking skills
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred

    • Experience in nonprofit communications or public engagement
    • Experience managing multi-channel communications (blog, podcast, campaigns)
    • Familiarity with messaging frameworks and brand voice development
    • Experience working across advocacy, program, or partnership teams

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Hybrid / remote with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Experience leading centralized communications strategy in a mission-driven organization
    • Opportunity to unify and elevate MAP’s public voice
    • Collaboration with leadership across advocacy, partnerships, and programs
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • A meaningful role shaping how MAP is seen, understood, and trusted

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume (required)
    • Cover letter (required) describing relevant experience in communications, public affairs, or messaging and interest in MAP’s mission

This role turns many voices into one clear voice.

Help ensure that everything we say—across every platform—moves in the same direction.
