September 11, 2001, remains one of the most significant days in American history, leaving a lasting impact on communities across the nation. Many first responders, healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and firefighters across the country risk their lives each day and play a vital role in keeping communities safe. These individuals respond to emergencies, provide lifesaving care, support families and individuals experiencing trauma, and strengthen their communities through service. As time shifts and new generations emerge, it is crucial to preserve the legacy of 9/11 by honoring these everyday heroes and educating youth on the importance of their service. The main goal of the project is to provide an educational and service-learning opportunity for elementary-aged children to connect with local public safety professionals by participating in interactive learning and impactful volunteer activities. Bay City Public Safety officers will participate in a school-wide assembly, introducing students to their professions through an interactive presentation that highlights their key roles and responsibilities within the community. This project will provide students with opportunities to observe demonstrations of specific skill sets, teamwork, and responsibilities required of law enforcement officers and firefighters. Following the assembly, students will return to their classrooms, where they will participate in an activity that directly benefits the local heroes of Bay County. A Bay City Public Safety officer will join each classroom, who will then facilitate a hands-on service activity while sharing personal experiences about serving their communities.Through these volunteer activities, students will have the opportunity to express appreciation while creating resources that directly benefit local first responders and the individuals they serve. Kindergarten through second grade will create handwritten thank-you cards that will be distributed to first responders throughout Bay County in recognition of their dedication and service. Students in third through fifth grade will assemble grab-and-go snack packs for the Law Enforcement Center, which houses Bay City Public Safety and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, along with many of the local fire departments to access while they are on duty. Additionally, the students will assemble comfort kits for public safety officers to provide youth who may be experiencing a distressing situation. These kits will provide temporary comfort to children in the midst of a traumatic experience where law enforcement, EMS, or firefighters may be involved. By bridging the connection between education and community engagement, the Hometown Heroes project will strengthen relationships between youth and local public safety professionals while honoring the legacy of September 11.
