Caring Hospice of Massachusetts is seeking compassionate, patient, and dependable volunteers to provide companionship and emotional support to hospice patients living with dementia. Your presence can bring comfort, reduce feelings of isolation, and create moments of connection for individuals facing memory loss and cognitive decline.

As a Dementia Companion Volunteer, you will offer friendship, reassurance, and engaging activities tailored to each patient's abilities and interests. No medical or personal care is required—simply your time, kindness, and willingness to listen.

Responsibilities

• Visit hospice patients in their home or care facility.
• Provide one-on-one companionship through conversation and a calming presence.
• Engage patients in meaningful activities such as:
  • Looking through family photos or memory books
  • Listening to favorite music
  • Reading aloud
  • Simple arts and crafts
  • Gentle games or puzzles appropriate for cognitive ability
  • Sharing stories and reminiscing
• Offer emotional support to patients and, when appropriate, family caregivers.
• Observe and report any significant changes or concerns to the hospice volunteer coordinator.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Qualifications

• Comfortable interacting with older adults experiencing memory loss.
• Good communication and listening skills.
• Ability to remain calm and flexible.
• No previous dementia experience required—we provide comprehensive training.

Training Provided

Volunteers receive hospice and dementia-specific training that includes:

• Understanding dementia and memory loss
• Effective communication techniques
• Person-centered care principles
• Safety and professional boundaries
• Hospice philosophy and volunteer responsibilities

Time Commitment

• Flexible scheduling based on your availability.
• Typically 1–2 hours per visit.
• Visits may occur weekly or biweekly.
