    Event Overview

LEGO Shipbuilding Day is one of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation’s most popular community events—bringing together creativity, engineering, maritime history, and family fun. Participants of all ages are invited to build imaginative LEGO ships—complete with masts, wings, wheels, or anything they can dream up! Guests may bring a creation from home or build one on-site using our extensive free-play LEGO collection.

Visitors can also explore STEM-based shipbuilding by completing step-by-step LEGO kits inspired by historic and naval vessels, including our very own Tall Ship of Delaware.

With hundreds of enthusiastic builders and families attending, volunteers play an essential role in ensuring the event runs smoothly, safely, and joyfully.

    Volunteer Roles

    • LEGO Shipbuilding Kit Assistant

Support families and children as they work through our guided LEGO shipbuilding kits based on real historic vessels. Responsibilities include:

      • Assisting participants with kit instructions
      • Replacing missing LEGO pieces from spare sets
      • Resetting kit stations so they are ready for the next builder
    • Free-Play LEGOs Attendant

Help inspire creativity at our free-building zones! Responsibilities include:

      • Welcoming guests and helping them find building space
      • Providing information about contest submission times
      • Offering gentle crowd management to keep the area flowing smoothly
    • Parking Crew

Make the arrival experience seamless by helping guests navigate our free parking options. Responsibilities include:

      • Directing visitors to available lots
      • Ensuring guests can easily find safe, accessible parking
    • Event Break-Down Team

After the fun concludes, we’ll need extra hands to reset the shipyard. Responsibilities include:

      • Folding and storing tables
      • Packing LEGO materials
      • Light sweeping and general event clean-up

    Volunteer Support & Training

All new volunteers will be partnered with experienced Kalmar Nyckel team members who will guide them through their role and ensure they feel supported and confident. Volunteers will also receive clear instructions and brief, hands-on tutorials at the start of their shift.

We welcome individuals, community groups, service organizations, school clubs, and corporate volunteer teams. This event is high-energy, family-friendly, and an absolutely wonderful way to get involved with our community.
