    Description

Machine Literate is building free, interactive AI-literacy lessons for students in grades 5–12, like Brilliant or Duolingo but for understanding how AI works, where it goes wrong and how to use it responsibly.

We're recruiting volunteer tutors to help students when they get stuck on a lesson. Real human help is what sets us apart from other free AI courses, so this is one of the most important roles we have.

Timing: Tutoring starts when our first lessons launch. Sign up now to join the founding tutor group, and you'll help shape how tutoring works before it begins.

    What you'd do:

    • Answer students' questions about a lesson through our platform
    • Explain ideas in a different way when the lesson doesn't click
    • Give feedback on where students get confused so we can improve lessons

Good fit if you: have tutored, taught, coached or mentored young people, and you're comfortable explaining basic AI ideas. You don't need to be an AI expert. We'll train you on the lessons.

Safety first: Every tutor completes a background check and our training before working with any student. Sessions happen only through our supervised platform, never by private message, phone or social media.

Commitment: Flexible. As little as 1–2 hours a week once tutoring starts.

Our mission: Make AI literacy free for every student, so they understand how AI works and learn to use it responsibly.

Why I started this: At my school, the head of school once said we are "afraid of the machines." That stuck with me. AI is going to be part of every student's future, so schools shouldn't fear it. They should teach it, and teach it responsibly.

About us: I'm Aditya Jhalani, and I founded Machine Literate, Inc., a New York nonprofit. We're pre-launch, and our first volunteers will help shape how everything works.

How it works: Remote, unpaid, adults 18+. Accepted volunteers join our team Slack and pick a first task. No calls required, but happy to talk if you'd like. You can pause or stop anytime. Unless you're a tutor, you won't work directly with students or see any student information.

How to apply: Click Apply on this page and answer a few short questions. It takes about 2 minutes and no résumé is needed.
