Position Title: Miniature Railroad & Village (MRRV) Volunteer

Goal or Purpose of the Position:
Kamin Science Center connects people and science, igniting curiosity that endures for a lifetime.
Volunteers will assist Program Presenters in engaging Science Center visitors of all ages and are responsible for providing excellent, personalized visitor experiences through a creative and informative visitor-oriented presentation of the exhibit. Position does not require familiarity with operating trains.
Responsibilities:
Greet visitors in a friendly manner.
Be familiar with the contents of the MRRV training manual.
Engage in informal, positive, informational, and personalized visitor interactions.
Maintain a high degree of situational awareness and bring any technical/train related or other issues to the attention of the MRRV Program Presenters. Assist under their guidance.
Assist with crowd control when needed to assure the best experience for our visitors.
Stay current with all new exhibits and programs at KSC to be able to assist visitors when needed throughout their visit to Kamin Science Center.
Follow MRRV safety and call-off procedures.
May assist Supervisor with special projects as they arise if volunteer already possess the required skills for that project. Supervisor will provide list of required skills for special projects, and may periodically offer training for volunteers to develop additional skills for special projects. If a volunteer is interested in assisting with a special project but does not possess the required skills, they must successfully completed training before assisting on special projects.
Time Commitment:
Minimum 4-hour per week + mandatory orientation. Shifts are available 7 days a week from 10-2 and 1-5. Volunteers are required to commit to one 4-hour shift/week at the same time on the same day. Exceptions can be made with prior Supervisor consent.
Qualifications:
Must have an interest in local history. Knowledge of railroading history or model trains not required.
Must be comfortable initiating conversations with visitors and proactively seeking out opportunities to interact with our guests as appropriate.
Must be comfortable working with team members and visitors of all ages and backgrounds, individually or in large groups.
Must be able to conform to all KSC policies.
Outgoing, friendly individual with excellent communication skills.

Clearances
Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers.
Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34).
Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).
