Description
The natural equilibrium of the Amazon’s ecosystems needs to be protected and volunteers can be part of it.
The Jungle Conservation program begins with 2 days in Cusco where volunteers participate in a mandatory orientation session and receive information about their trip to the project site. Volunteers go to a conservation site in the Amazon Rainforest, outside of Cusco. There, they are involved in various types of work depending on the current needs of the project.
Volunteers take part in a variety of activities, including:
- Reforestation-planting trees, shrubs, and orchids
- Removing invasive, non-native species of bamboo
- Wildlife monitoring-observing and counting species of birds, insects (especially butterflies), amphibians, and primates
- Organic gardening
- Trail maintenance
- Scientific research in biology, chemistry, and zoology
- Educational workshops with local communities
On rainy days work may be limited to indoor activities, such as doing repairs at the lodge and/or working with the local school. Sometimes there are opportunities to teach English to the staff and community members.
