    Description

Join Our Disaster Shelter Team in Sacramento County!

    Overview:

When a large disaster event requires a community to evacuate, the American Red Cross volunteer team works to open a shelter for evacuees.

Shelter team members provide excellent customer service to disaster evacuation shelter clients to ensure their needs are met. These team members will complete tasks necessary for regular shelter operations. This may require activities in the various shelter areas, including:

    • Reception
    • Registration
    • Information
    • Dormitory
    • Meal Areas

    Schedule Requirements:

Shelters are only opened when needed because of a disaster evacuation in the area. We are seeking volunteers available to support shifts for a two-week period when a disaster evacuation shelter is needed within Sacramento County.

    General Requirements:

    • Maintain current training requirements for the Shelter Service Associate role (approximately 4 hours of online self-paced classes).
    • Ability to work in a continuously changing environment in which work priorities may change frequently.
    • Comfortable interacting with people from various diverse backgrounds whose lives have been disrupted. Many are presenting immediate needs.
    • Comfortable working in a team environment as a frontline worker under the direction of a supervisor.
    • Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English.
    • Willingness to comply with current public health and Red Cross policies.
    • Valid Driver’s License (required for Divisional and National Deployments).

    Additional Expectations:

    • Please maintain current availability and contact details in online Red Cross volunteer profile.
    • Communicate quickly when called upon to support an evacuation shelter
