    Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, and community. Through storytelling, journalism, and publishing, MAP elevates the voices of youth, families, educators, and communities working toward stability, dignity, and opportunity.

    About PromiseReport | Magazine & Journalism

    PromiseReport is MAP’s magazine and journalism platform dedicated to thoughtful reporting, storytelling, and commentary on issues affecting youth and families. The publication explores topics such as housing instability, education, mentorship, youth culture, civic engagement, and community resilience.

    Through essays, feature stories, interviews, and commentary, PromiseReport seeks to inform, inspire, and elevate perspectives that are often overlooked.

    Role Overview

    We are seeking a Magazine Writer to contribute thoughtful, well-researched articles and essays for the Mentor A Promise magazine. Writers will help produce engaging and responsible journalism that highlights community experiences, youth voices, and social issues connected to MAP’s mission.

    The ideal candidate brings curiosity, empathy, and strong writing skills, with the ability to translate complex topics into accessible and compelling stories.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Write feature articles, essays, interviews, and commentary for the MAP magazine
    • Research topics related to youth development, housing, education, and community life
    • Collaborate with editors on story development and editorial revisions
    • Conduct interviews with community members, mentors, educators, and partners when appropriate
    • Maintain high editorial and journalistic standards
    • Contribute ideas for future stories and thematic issues
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Strong writing and storytelling skills
    • Ability to research and develop thoughtful articles
    • Interest in journalism, storytelling, or editorial writing
    • Ability to meet agreed-upon writing deadlines
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred

    • Background in journalism, writing, communications, or media
    • Experience writing feature articles or essays
    • Interest in youth development, housing policy, or social impact storytelling
    • Experience conducting interviews or narrative reporting

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
