    Description:

    We are seeking an ESL Instructor to lead English language classes for residents at Beth Asher who have expressed strong interest in improving their English skills. This role focuses on teaching practical, everyday English to help residents better communicate in their community, ask for assistance, and access services. Classes are held bi‑weekly with flexible timing on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays, beginning in June. Volunteer parking is available in a staff parking space. Knowledge of Cantonese is strongly preferred.

    Reports to:

    Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator

    Goal of Position:

    To support residents in developing functional English language skills that increase confidence, independence, and community engagement.

    Specific Tasks:

    1. Prepare engaging ESL lesson plans prior to each class session.
    2. Teach practical English for common situations such as greetings, shopping, medical appointments, and emergencies.
    3. Use a variety of teaching methods including worksheets, visual aids, and group activities to support different learning styles.
    4. Encourage participation and gather feedback on topics residents would like to learn.
    5. Answer student questions and provide clear explanations.
    6. Monitor attendance and ensure all participants sign the sign‑in sheet.

    Qualifications:

    Physical/Age Requirements:

    • Ability to stand and move around the classroom during class sessions.

    Skills/Education/Experience:

    • Fluent in English with a clear and audible speaking voice.
    • Friendly, patient, and open‑minded with an interest in teaching adult English learners and working with seniors.
    • ESL training or interest in receiving ESL training is preferred.
    • Previous teaching experience is preferred.
    • Cantonese language skills strongly preferred.
