    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young people experiencing housing instability through mentorship, educational support, and community-based programs. As the organization expands its programs, communications, publishing initiatives, campaigns, and mission-driven products, we are building the leadership and operating structure needed to support that growth.

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is seeking an experienced Director of Marketing & Communications to lead our Marketing & Communications function and help shape how the organization, its programs, campaigns, publications, developing brands, products, and other initiatives reach and engage their audiences.

This is a strategic leadership role for someone who can build direction, establish priorities, coordinate a multidisciplinary team, and ensure that marketing and communications work moves forward consistently and effectively. The Director of Marketing & Communications will guide the department while remaining willing to work hands-on when circumstances require it.

The successful candidate will be an experienced marketing and communications leader—not simply a social media specialist or individual contributor—who can manage multiple initiatives, communicate clearly, make sound decisions, and provide structure and direction to a volunteer team.

    What You’ll Do

    • Lead the Marketing & Communications function, establishing priorities, plans, workflows, and standards for the department.
    • Develop and oversee integrated marketing and communications strategies supporting MAP’s programs and services, education and mentorship initiatives, fundraising and community engagement, organizational campaigns, publications, digital platforms, developing brands and products, and other public-facing initiatives.
    • Lead and coordinate a multidisciplinary volunteer team working across marketing, communications, writing, social media, campaigns, and related functions.
    • Translate organizational priorities into clear marketing plans, assignments, timelines, and deliverables.
    • Provide strategic direction while stepping into hands-on execution when necessary.
    • Guide campaign development across digital, social, web, email, publishing, and other appropriate channels.
    • Help develop audience, messaging, content, and channel strategies for MAP and its growing portfolio of programs, initiatives, brands, publications, and products.
    • Collaborate closely with the Creative Director and the Director of Merchandising and Brand/Product Development to ensure coordinated brand, marketing, communications, creative, and product initiatives.
    • Work across MAP to understand the goals and needs of individual divisions and translate them into effective marketing and communications strategies.
    • Maintain effective communication across the team and respond promptly to email, chat, questions, approvals, and other time-sensitive communications.
    • Help create a dependable, well-organized Marketing & Communications operation capable of supporting ongoing organizational needs as well as major campaigns, launches, and initiatives.

    What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone with demonstrated experience leading marketing and communications work at a strategic level.

    Strong candidates will bring:

    • Significant experience in marketing, communications, integrated campaigns, or a closely related discipline.
    • Experience leading a marketing or communications team, department, or significant cross-functional initiative.
    • The ability to guide multidisciplinary contributors with different areas of expertise.
    • Strong strategic thinking combined with enough practical experience to step into execution when needed.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational communication skills.
    • Strong judgment, follow-through, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Comfort working in a remote, collaborative environment.
    • The ability and willingness to communicate regularly and respond promptly through email, chat, and other team communication channels.
    • A leadership style that provides clear direction, accountability, and support without requiring constant oversight.

Experience in one or more of the following areas is especially valuable:

    • Nonprofit or mission-driven organizations
    • Education or youth-focused organizations
    • Publishing
    • Consumer products and e-commerce
    • Social media and digital marketing
    • Brand or product launches
    • Integrated marketing campaigns

    Working Relationships

The Director of Marketing & Communications reports to the Chief Brand & Product Officer and works closely with the Creative Director, Director of Merchandising and Brand/Product Development, and other organizational leaders.

Because Marketing & Communications supports the organization as a whole, this position will work across MAP’s divisions and functional areas, including mentorship and programs, education, advocacy and services, fundraising and development, volunteer engagement, operations, technology, brand and creative, publishing and product development, and other organizational initiatives.

The Director of Marketing & Communications will partner with subject-matter and division leaders to understand their goals, audiences, priorities, and requirements, then help determine how Marketing & Communications can best support them. The role will also coordinate the multidisciplinary team responsible for executing MAP’s marketing and communications activities.

    Time Commitment

Approximately 5–10 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling.

Because this is a leadership position within a distributed volunteer organization, regular communication and dependable responsiveness are essential. Candidates should be able to remain engaged throughout the week and respond promptly to reasonable email, chat, and team communications rather than limiting participation to a single scheduled block of time.

    Location

This is a fully remote volunteer position.

    How to Apply

    Please submit:

    • A current resume
    • A brief cover letter describing your relevant marketing and communications leadership experience and your interest in supporting Mentor A Promise

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with the goal of filling the position promptly.

    Volunteer Eligibility and Sponsorship
