Join us in helping students experience teamwork, leadership, and personal accomplishment in the Boundary Waters and be inspired by the powerful effect that nature has on young people!
Through the Project Success Expeditions program, Minneapolis middle school students have the opportunity to spend a week exploring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The Project Success BWCA Leader partners with a trained Wilderness Guide to lead a group of middle school students in the BWCA for a week-long canoe and camping trip.
Required Pre-Trip Preparation:
- Participate in 4-6 hours of BWCA Leader Training
- Lead a virtual “get to know you” session with your group
BWCA Trip Execution:
- Volunteer Trip Leaders attend a week-long canoe and camping trip in the BWCA with seven students and a Wilderness Guide
- You will partner with the guide to provide strong, cohesive leadership for your students
- You will participate with your group in all trip activities including paddling, portaging, camp set up and breakdown, etc.
- You will support students in your group by:
- Encouraging student participation
- Looking out for student safety
- Creating a positive atmosphere of inclusivity, teamwork, and community
- Leading discussions about highlights, challenges, and goals
- Providing emotional/behavioral support
- Supporting the guide’s instructions
Trip Leaders Must:
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Find joy in working with youth
- Have patience, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Be committed to creating inclusive environments
- Pass a background check
