    Description

    Academic Instructors

    Position Title: Academic Coach Work Hours: 4-8hours per week | Flexible schedule

    Supervisor: Academics Manager Team: CfWE Team

    Classification: Volunteer Duration: 3 - 6 month commitment preferred

    Position Specifications: We are seeking a compassionate and experienced volunteer educator—such as a retired teacher—to support adult learners in obtaining secondary and post-secondary credentials. Academic Coach Volunteer, you will lead or assist in teaching academic skills in subjects such as basic to applied mathematics, English Literacy and language arts, as well as critical and analytical thinking. Your work will help empower learners by building their confidence, knowledge, and ability to pass standardized exams and reach their educational goals.

    Major Responsibilities:

    • Plan and deliver engaging, level-appropriate lessons in one or more subject areas (workplace math, trades math, workplace literacy, language arts, english language development)
    • Assist students with understanding key concepts and developing test-taking strategies
    • Provide individual or small group instruction and support
    • Monitor student progress and provide feedback and encouragement
    • Collaborate with program staff to align instruction with curriculum standards
    • Maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful learning environment
    • Help identify students who may need additional support or resources
    • Attend occasional volunteer meetings or trainings, if applicable

    Minimum Position Qualifications

    • Former educator, retired teacher, or individual with strong teaching/tutoring experience (especially with adult learners)
    • Familiarity with GED/WorkKeys/ASVAB/GRE subject matter and exam structure (or willingness to learn)
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting adult learners
    • Ability to work independently and manage small groups
    • Experience working with diverse populations is a plus

    Training & Support

    • Volunteers receive orientation, access to curriculum and materials, and ongoing support from program staff.
