    Description

    Who We Are

Unruled Masses is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public-interest intelligence organization focused on exposing corruption, abuse of power, and systemic exploitation—while helping communities peacefully reclaim agency, accountability, and civic life.

We combine rigorous intelligence tradecraft with public-facing analysis and real-world civic action. We don’t just report on problems; we provide "industrial-grade" intelligence that serves as the foundation for organized resistance. To ensure our work is unassailable, we need a seasoned editorial leader to manage the production of our corruption intelligence and ensure every brief we publish meets the highest standards of journalistic integrity.

    Who You Are

You are a veteran of the newsroom—a disciplined editor who understands that in the fight against institutional capture, accuracy is our greatest weapon. You have a background in journalism and have held leadership roles at newspapers, magazines, or major news organizations, or similar environments where publications are being arranged on deadlines.

You possess a "sharp red pen" and an even sharper strategic mind. You know how to manage a team of researchers, spot the "missing link" in a story, and ensure that complex data is translated into a compelling narrative for the public. You are motivated by truth and believe that well-vetted evidence is the only way to defeat propaganda.

    What You’ll Do

As the Chief Editor, you will:

    • Lead the Research Team: Oversee our team of Corruption Researchers, providing direction, mentorship, and structural guidance on their investigations.
    • Strategize the Editorial Calendar: Organize and prioritize research topics, ensuring a steady and strategic cadence of intelligence briefs, alerts, and deep-dives.
    • Master Quality Control: Review all research and written work for clarity, tone, and accuracy. You are the final line of defense for quality control.
    • Final Validation: Run rigorous validation checks on evidence files to ensure all published findings are grounded in verified data and "industrial-grade" tradecraft.
    • Manage Production: Coordinate the transition of raw research into final production-ready formats for our website, newsletters, and multimedia presenters.
    • Bridge Intelligence to Action: Collaborate with action coordinators to ensure our editorial output provides the necessary context for real-world civic mobilization.

    Exceptional volunteers may:

    • Shape the long-term organizational strategy for Unruled Masses.
    • Build and scale the editorial department as the organization grows.
    • Represent the organization in high-level editorial partnerships.
    • Develop proprietary standards for "Public-Interest Intelligence" reporting.

    Research Areas of Interest

You will oversee the editorial direction across all our focus areas, including: Policing & Public Safety; Transparency & Open Government; Corporate Collusion; Surveillance & Data Exploitation; Finance & Taxation; and Judiciary & Legal Process.

    Ideal Qualifications

    • Journalistic Pedigree: Significant experience in editorial roles within professional news organizations (newspapers, magazines, or digital news).
    • Leadership Experience: Proven ability to manage a team, keep projects on schedule, and maintain morale in a high-stakes, remote environment.
    • Editorial Excellence: A master-level command of writing, editing, and fact-checking. You know how to make a story "punchy" without sacrificing nuance.
    • Strategic Thinking: Ability to see the "big picture" of institutional capture and decide which stories will have the most significant impact on democracy-building.
    • Integrity: An unwavering commitment to objective, evidence-based reporting and the ability to navigate complex ethical landscapes.
    • Workflow Management: Comfortable using digital project management tools to run an efficient, remote editorial desk.

    Compensation & Commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role. Given the leadership nature of this position, we ask for a commitment of 5–10 hours a week to effectively manage the team and the editorial calendar. As funding allows, this role is a primary candidate for transition into a paid leadership position.

Benefits of Volunteering with Unruled Masses

    • Lead a Mission-Critical Team: Serve as a founding pillar of an organization designed to dismantle systemic corruption.
    • Influence the National Narrative: Direct the production of intelligence that changes how the public perceives power and propaganda.
    • Collaborate with Experts: Work alongside OSINT specialists, legal researchers, and strategic organizers.
    • Professional Legacy: Build a unique editorial department that bridges the gap between intelligence tradecraft and civic action.
    • Dismantle Capture: Use your professional skills to help people reclaim their agency and rebuild their communities.
