Shechem at Hope Street is a community center on 26th and Capitol.
Monday-Friday afterschool programming from 3-6pm, on Fridays 3-5pm. We mostly serve middle and high schoolers but some elementary kids join as well.
We are seeking positive role-models:
Spend time in the gym during this time. Volunteers are encouraged to build relationships with our members/ participants in open gym and act as mentors. Volunteers could join in on basketball games, scorekeep, watch games and talk to those on the sidelines. Volunteers can help keep the gym a positive and safe place free from fighting and cursing and can help make sure every kid has an opportunity to play.
Handle check in. Watch the door and let people in, then check them in online and use our medal detector wand to ensure security. Be the first positive face people see upon coming in! Get to know the kids.
Oversee a room and play with kids. We have a few classroom spaces that need oversight. While in these spaces you can do arts and crafts with kids, play games, help with homework, have conversation, or bring your own fun activity to get kids engaged. We have had volunteers bring woodworking projects, cookies and cakes to decorate, pillows to sew, etc!
Ideally, a volunteer is willing to come once a week, but we are willing to work with you on what works.
The first step is to fill out a volunteer interest form:

Then we will set up a meeting and get a background check done!
