Your main role will be patient and family support, but there’s a variety of opportunities to find what best fits your talents and schedule. Volunteers are unable to provide hands-on care, give medications, feed or provide personal hygiene care. Here are just a few of our volunteer opportunities:
Respite Visits for Caregiver
Volunteers provide companionship to the patient while the caregiver is away to run errands or just relax.
Befriending Visits for Patient
Volunteers visit patients on a regular basis to provide support, a caring presence and compassionate listening. Volunteers can read to a patient, play cards or games, write letters, knit, bake and more.
A patient who is a military veteran can request a volunteer military veteran to visit.
Running Errands and Light Housekeeping
We have volunteers that would be happy to run to the grocery store, stop by the post office, or pick up dry cleaning. A shopping list and cash will need to be provided by the patient/caregiver.
Or maybe the front yard needs to be raked, laundry folded, or the ceiling fan blades wiped…we have volunteers that can also do light housekeeping (no bathrooms), cooking or yard work to help out.
Hats, Afghans & Lap Robes
Artsy volunteers create hand-knit or crocheted hats, lap robes and afghans to keep patients cozy and provided to the patient at no cost.
Vigil Presence
With their presence, volunteers help patients and family members feel less alone on their journey. It can be comforting to have someone sit quietly at the bedside, hold a hand or whisper words of comfort. Volunteers can help create a peaceful atmosphere for families, listening to stories about their loved ones or helping them say goodbye.
Complimentary Therapies
Memory Bears and Memory Pillows
Crafty volunteers create lasting memorials in the form of a bear, or a pillow made from the patient’s favorite apparel. These keepsakes may also offer comfort to family and friends in the future. These handcrafted treasures are provided at no cost to the families.
Comfort Calls
A select group of volunteers make weekly phone calls to home patients and caregivers to assess their needs in between nursing visits.
AdventHealth Hospice cares for patients and families living in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties. As a member of the Denver community since 1987, we'd love to include you on our team in helping others with their end-of-life journey.
