    Description

    Who We Are

Unruled Masses is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public-interest intelligence organization focused on exposing corruption, abuse of power, and systemic exploitation—while helping communities peacefully reclaim agency, accountability, and civic life.

We combine rigorous intelligence tradecraft with public-facing analysis and real-world civic action. We don’t just report on problems; we provide "industrial-grade" intelligence that serves as the foundation for organized resistance. To reach the public effectively, we are building specialized editorial teams centered around specific domains of institutional abuse to ensure our research is clear, accurate, and actionable.

    Who You Are

You are a skilled communicator with a "sharp red pen" and a deep interest in a specific area of public policy or institutional governance. You may be a professional editor, a subject matter expert with a gift for writing, or a former journalist looking to apply your skills to a high-impact mission.

You believe that accuracy is the greatest weapon against institutional capture. You are organized, deadline-driven, and enjoy the process of taking raw research and polishing it into a compelling narrative. You aren't just a grammarian; you are a strategic thinker who knows how to keep a project on track and a team of researchers focused on the most impactful goals.

    What You’ll Do

As a Corruption Research Editor, you will be assigned to a specific "Abuse Domain" (e.g., Policing, Elections, or Housing) to:

    • Manage a Domain Team: Oversee a dedicated group of Corruption Researchers focused on your specific subject area, providing guidance and mentorship on their investigations.
    • Direct the Editorial Calendar: Organize and prioritize research projects within your domain, ensuring a steady cadence of intelligence briefs, community alerts, and deep-dives.
    • Execute Quality Control: Review and edit all research and written work for clarity, tone, and accuracy. You ensure that complex data is translated into "human-readable" analysis.
    • Collaborate on Research Focus: Work with analysts to identify the "missing links" in an investigation and determine which projects will most effectively serve the community.
    • Maintain Production Standards: Coordinate the transition of raw data into final, production-ready formats for our website, newsletters, and multimedia platforms.
    • Bridge Intelligence to Action: Collaborate with the communications team to ensure that your domain’s output provides the necessary context for real-world civic mobilization.

    Exceptional volunteers may:

    • Serve as a Senior Editor overseeing multiple domain teams.
    • Help develop the proprietary "Action Playbook" for their specific subject area.
    • Lead high-level investigative projects and editorial partnerships.

    Research Areas of Interest

We are seeking Editors for the following domains (Please specify your area of expertise):

Policing & Public Safety; Elections & Voting; Transparency & Open Government; Procurement & Public Contracts; Judiciary & Legal Process; Surveillance & Data Exploitation; Labor & Workplace; Housing & Community Control; Land Use & Environment; Health & Social Services; Finance & Taxation; Digital Platforms & Algorithms; Media & Broadcasting; Education; Immigration & Borders; Utilities & Infrastructure; International & Diplomacy; Identity & Civil Equality; Speech & Information; Protest & Assembly; Gender & Reproductive Equality; Corporate Collusion & Corruption; Religious Institutions & Governance; Defense & Military Justice; Professional Licensing & Self-Regulation; Guardianship & Probate; Food & Drug & Agriculture Regulators; Transportation & Safety Regulators; Sports Governance; Nonprofits & Philanthropy; Consular & Civil Registries; Elder Care & Disability Services; Private Security & Prison Contractors.

    Ideal Qualifications

    • Editorial Excellence: Strong experience in editing, copy editing, or professional writing. You know how to make text "punchy" without losing technical nuance.
    • Subject Matter Expertise: A demonstrable background or deep interest in one of the research areas listed above.
    • Project Management: Ability to manage a remote team, keep work on track, and meet deadlines in a structured workflow.
    • Communicator: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to give constructive feedback to researchers.
    • Tech Savvy: Comfortable using digital collaboration and project management tools.
    • Bachelors or Masters Degree: In English, journalism, communications or other relevant areas.

    Compensation & Commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role. We ask for a commitment of 3–5 hours a week to manage your domain team and oversee the editorial production.
