    Position Overview

LASH Foundation is seeking an experienced Grant Writer to research, develop, and submit grant proposals to foundations, government agencies, and corporate giving programs. This volunteer role is critical to expanding LASH Foundation's capacity to fund community programs, food service initiatives, and charitable outreach.

The Grant Writer will work directly with Foundation leadership — including President Badia Bayyinah Shephard and Board Chair Saifullah Amun El — to articulate our mission, document program outcomes, and identify funding opportunities aligned with our 501(c)(3) public charity status.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Research and identify grant opportunities from foundations, government sources, and corporate giving programs operating in our service regions
    • Draft compelling letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and supporting narratives that align with funder priorities
    • Prepare and submit solicitation letters requesting donations and program funding from large organizations across Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, and Nevada
    • Maintain a grant calendar tracking deadlines, reporting requirements, and renewal cycles
    • Write follow-up reports and stewardship communications to current and prospective funders
    • Coordinate with the Treasurer (Kim Bryant) to gather financial documents, program budgets, and supporting attachments required for submissions
    • Assist with IRS 990 narrative sections and public-facing program descriptions as needed
    • Track grant outcomes and maintain organized records of all submissions and correspondence

    Qualifications

    • Prior experience writing grants for nonprofit organizations; knowledge of 501(c)(3) compliance requirements preferred
    • Strong written communication skills with ability to tailor voice and content to diverse funders
    • Familiarity with foundation databases (Candid/GuideStar, GrantStation, or similar) a plus
    • Self-directed, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines independently
    • Commitment to LASH Foundation's mission of community support and charitable service
