    Description

    Associate Editor - Remote

Watching America (WatchingAmerica.com) is an internationally renowned website that translates foreign news about the U.S. from all over the world, to enable Americans to see how they and their policies are perceived globally. Over its thirteen years of existence, it has gained mainstream recognition in the U.S. and abroad and has been talked about by, among others, the BBC, NPR, Foreign Policy Magazine, The Guardian and The Village Voice. It depends on a team of volunteers who benefit from the prestige of the project in developing their careers elsewhere, and who have a passion for the idea of breaking down the final barrier among peoples of the world — the language barrier.

We are currently seeking an associate editor to edit articles translated into English. Though it is helpful to be fluent in another foreign language, the position does not require any special language skills, nor does it require any previous editing experience. We find that the most suitable applicants are avid news readers and those with a solid grasp of English grammar. Applicants must be available to edit articles for one hour each day, five days a week, for one year.

Since Watching America is largely a virtual project, you must be comfortable with email communication and be willing to stay in regular contact with translators, the senior editor (Helaine Schweitzer), the managing editor (Gillian Palmer), and other members of the Watching America editorial team. While this is a volunteer position, it helps build your resume, allows you to work from anywhere in the world, and comes with an offer of a solid letter of recommendation from Robin Koerner, president and publisher of Watching America. Any new ideas you may have for the project are welcome!
