Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), creative expression, education, housing innovation, and community-based programs. MAP operates within complex legal and regulatory environments, making strong legal operations and compliance systems essential to protecting children, families, staff, volunteers, and the organization itself.

At MAP, legal operations are proactive, preventive, and mission-protective.

About the Legal, Ethics & Protection Function

The Legal, Ethics & Protection function safeguards MAP’s compliance, governance, and risk management across all divisions. It ensures that legal processes, documentation, and controls are well-managed, auditable, and aligned with MAP’s values, ethical standards, and legal obligations.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Director of Legal Operations & Compliance to lead MAP’s day-to-day legal operations, compliance tracking, and internal legal workflows. This role focuses on building and maintaining the systems that ensure legal responsibilities are met accurately, on time, and with transparency.

The Director of Legal Operations & Compliance works closely with Executive Leadership, Human Resources & Operations, Finance & Accounting, IT Security & Privacy, and Program leadership to ensure legal requirements are embedded into organizational operations.

    • Manage compliance calendars, deadlines, and regulatory requirements
    • Ensure timely filings, renewals, certifications, and regulatory reporting
    • Maintain centralized legal records and document control systems
    • Coordinate legal operations across HR, Finance, IT, and Program teams
    • Support audits, board reviews, and internal or external compliance reporting
    • Partner with Legal leadership and pro bono counsel as needed
    • Implement improvements to legal processes, workflows, and internal controls
    • Support risk management, governance documentation, and organizational compliance
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Experience managing documentation, calendars, and regulatory requirements
    • Ability to coordinate across multiple departments and stakeholders
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills
    • High level of discretion and professionalism
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience in nonprofit, education, healthcare, or youth-serving organizations
    • Familiarity with compliance tracking, audits, or governance documentation
    • Experience working with attorneys, compliance officers, or regulators
    • Background in process improvement or operational controls
    • Comfort supporting distributed teams using Google Workspace

    Commitment

    • Volunteer leadership role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Senior-level experience leading legal operations and compliance systems
    • Exposure to nonprofit governance, audits, and regulatory compliance
