    Description

    About the Opportunity

Join Jumpstart for Young Children, a national early education nonprofit working to ensure every child enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Through evidence-based programming, volunteers support preschool children in building critical language, literacy, and social-emotional skills.

This summer, we’re inviting high school and college students, as well as community members, to make a meaningful impact in local preschool classrooms across Los Angeles County.

    Impact

As a Jumpstart volunteer, you’ll help close the early learning gap by engaging young children in structured reading and learning activities that build the foundation for lifelong success. Your time will directly support children in under-resourced communities—helping them develop the skills they need before kindergarten.

    🎨 What You’ll Do

    • Read engaging, story-based books with preschoolers
    • Lead fun, hands-on activities (think games, art, and imaginative play!)
    • Build meaningful connections through conversation and encouragement
    • Be a positive, consistent presence in a child’s learning journey
    • No experience needed—we’ll train you and provide everything you need (including your Jumpstart t-shirt đź‘•).

All volunteers will receive training, materials, and a Jumpstart t-shirt to wear during

    sessions.

    ⏰ Commitment

    • 6–8 week summer program
    • About 4 hours per week
    • Sessions take place 2–3 times per week (varies by location)

Volunteers can select preferred sites and schedules through our intake form.

    âś… Who Can Apply

    • Must be at least 16 years old (high school students, college students, and community members welcome)
    • Commitment to attend scheduled sessions consistently
    • Interest in working with young children (ages 3–5)
    • Willingness to participate in a brief training prior to starting
    • Ability to travel to assigned site

    🌱 What You’ll Gain

    • Earn verified community service hours
    • Gain hands-on experience in education and child development
    • Build leadership and communication skills
    • Make a tangible difference in your community

    ⚕️ Health & Site Requirements

To ensure the safety of children and classrooms, partner sites require:

    • TB test clearance
    • Proof of MMR vaccination
    • Flu shot (as required by site)

Our team will guide you through this process and answer any questions along the

    way.
