    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, and community. Our work centers dignity, equity, and accountability—fostering resilience and opening pathways to stability, opportunity, and long-term opportunity.

At MAP, brand is not surface—it is infrastructure.

It shapes trust, governs perception, and determines how communities, partners, and institutions experience our work.

About PromiseBrands | Enterprise Brand & Identity Systems

PromiseBrands is MAP’s enterprise brand division—responsible for the architecture, governance, and evolution of the organization’s identity across all divisions, programs, platforms, and public interfaces.

This is not a marketing function.

    This is institutional brand governance.

PromiseBrands ensures that every expression of MAP—visual, verbal, experiential—is:

    • Cohesive
    • Dignified
    • Strategically aligned
    • Scalable across systems

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Chief of PromiseBrands to serve as the architect and steward of MAP’s global brand system.

This executive role defines how MAP is seen, understood, and trusted—across programs, storytelling, partnerships, technology, and public engagement.

The Chief of PromiseBrands operates at the intersection of:

    • Strategy
    • Design systems
    • Narrative architecture
    • Institutional trust

This role is responsible for building a brand that is not only consistent—but structurally sound, culturally intelligent, and enduring.

    Core Responsibilities

    Enterprise Brand Strategy & Positioning

    • Define MAP’s long-term brand positioning and institutional identity
    • Establish brand as a strategic asset across all divisions
    • Build a scalable brand architecture across programs and initiatives

    Brand Governance & Systems Design

    • Develop and enforce organization-wide brand governance frameworks
    • Create standards for identity, usage, and brand compliance across divisions
    • Prevent fragmentation and ensure system-wide coherence

    Creative Direction & Identity Infrastructure

    • Oversee all visual identity systems, design languages, and creative outputs
    • Guide high-level creative direction across storytelling, media, and campaigns
    • Ensure brand expression reflects dignity, cultural responsiveness, and mission integrity

    Narrative & Messaging Architecture

    • Define MAP’s voice, tone, and messaging frameworks
    • Ensure all communications are trauma-informed, ethically grounded, and aligned
    • Partner with PromiseStories and PromisePublic to shape public narrative

    Cross-Division Integration

    • Align brand across PromiseLearning, PromiseStories, PromiseStudios, PromisePublic, and PromiseRise
    • Partner with PromiseStack to ensure digital product and platform brand consistency
    • Collaborate with PromiseFinance on external-facing financial and institutional materials

    Brand Integrity & Executive Oversight

    • Serve as final reviewer for high-impact brand and communication outputs
    • Ensure consistency across partnerships, external communications, and public presence
    • Protect and elevate MAP’s reputation and institutional trust

    Leadership & Capacity Building

    • Build and guide a distributed network of designers, storytellers, and brand contributors
    • Establish systems for scalable, high-quality creative production
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    Required

    • 10+ years of experience in brand strategy, creative direction, or identity systems leadership
    • Proven ability to build and govern brand systems across complex organizations
    • Deep understanding of design systems, narrative strategy, and institutional branding
    • Experience leading cross-functional teams and aligning multiple stakeholders
    • Exceptional strategic thinking paired with high-level execution
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred

    • Experience in nonprofit, social impact, or public-sector institutions
    • Background spanning design, storytelling, communications, or brand strategy
    • Experience building brands across multi-division or multi-platform ecosystems
    • Understanding of trauma-informed, culturally responsive communication

    Commitment

    • Volunteer executive leadership role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Hybrid / remote, with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Executive authority in shaping a mission-driven organization’s brand at scale
    • Direct partnership with the CEO and senior leadership
    • Opportunity to build a category-defining nonprofit brand system
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • A meaningful role influencing how dignity, trust, and impact are communicated at scale
