Inside the Hall House: A Night of History and Hospitality
Interested in learning more about the history of the Hall House?
Join us on February 9th at 6 pm for an intimate wine-and-cheese social hour and a free, engaging history lesson about the home—its early 19th-century origins, the families who lived there, and its lasting place in our community. You’ll also learn how you can help keep its stories alive and support the HSF mission of preservation through volunteer opportunities such as the Hall House docent program. If you enjoy history and connecting with others, this is a great way to get involved.

Commonly asked questions about becoming a Docent for the Josephus W. Hall House
I don’t know much about the Hall House. Is training involved in becoming a docent?
Yes, training is provided and is fun! We hold training classes on an as needed basis and you will have the opportunity to attend classes for free and to shadow with more experienced docents during regular tours hours until you have enough knowledge to become a regular docent for the Hall House.
Is there a script docents use during tours?
There is a script docents use for training purposes sharing the history of the Hall House, but we encourage our docents to use their own methods of storytelling to make their individual tours fun and unique! Self-guided tours are also now permitted with docents available to give directions and answer questions.
Is there any cost or fee for docent training?
Absolutely not! Classes are free and fun and we can’t wait for you to join us!
Do docents wear costumes?
No, docents for the Hall House do not wear costumes. We ask that our docents be dressed neatly and properly to conduct tours, but there is no dress code.
How often will I be required to volunteer?
We like our docents to volunteer one Saturday afternoon per month during regular open hours 1-4pm. Occasionally you may only be needed once every two months and if you can’t volunteer at all sometimes, that is fine! There is no pressure! Docent volunteers sign up monthly for the date that works best for them. If a month is not convenient for you we always have your back and will have enough volunteers to back-up any slots that become vacant.
Can friends or couples volunteer together for tours?
Yes! We have had couples sign up to volunteer together during October Tour and many of our regular docents have friends they love to work with regularly! Scheduling friends and family together is no problem!
Are there any physical requirements to becoming a docent?
Yes, docents need to be able to access stairs during tours.
What are the benefits of becoming a docent?
If you love history, storytelling and meeting new people with a common interest in history, being a docent is right for you! You will meet people from all walks of life and will make new friends! And just wait until October Tour! You will have the very first opportunity to sign up to be a docent for October Tour. Also, being part of HSF gives you the opportunity to help save historic homes from demolition by helping increase memberships and raising funds for HSF’s Revolving Fund. Through memberships and donations, this fund enables us to continue purchasing and savings homes like the Hall House that represent our history.
Actual volunteer opportunities take place March - December on Saturdays from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Our docents always work in teams of two to greet visitors and guests. FEB. 9 at 6PM is simply the meeting to learn more about the history of the property and to find out more about volunteering.
