    Level Up Learning Lab | Harlem Commonwealth Council

    Harlem Commonwealth Council (HCC) is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer Literacy Tutors to support middle school students through our Level Up Learning Lab, a Saturday academic enrichment program focused on strengthening reading comprehension, writing skills, and overall literacy development.

    This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about literacy, youth development, and educational equity, and who want to make a meaningful impact in the Harlem community.

    Program Details

    • Schedule: Weekly, Saturdays, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • Dates: February through June 2026
    • Student Population: Middle school students (grades 6–8)
    • Location: Harlem (exact location provided upon onboarding)
    • Commitment: Consistent weekly participation strongly preferred

    HCC follows all DOH and DOE background check requirements. All volunteers are required to complete a full background check prior to participation.

    Tutor Responsibilities

    • Provide small-group or one-on-one literacy support
    • Support reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and written expression
    • Assist students with reading assignments, writing activities, and skill-building exercises
    • Encourage confidence, critical thinking, and positive academic habits
    • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students

    Who We’re Looking For

    • Advanced or high-performing high school students
    • College students, educators, or community members
    • Strong readers and writers with a solid grasp of grammar and comprehension skills
    • Reliable, patient, and supportive individuals
    • Prior tutoring or experience working with youth is a plus, but not required
