    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, literacy development, creative expression, and housing initiatives, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

Our technology initiatives — PromisePath (a student learning app) and PromiseLink (a mentor engagement platform) — connect mentors, educators, and students through digital innovation. Together, they create pathways for learning, belonging, and opportunity.

We are seeking a Full Stack Developer to join our technology team and help build, improve, and maintain MAP’s digital platforms and web presence.

    About the Role

We are seeking a passionate Full Stack Developer to build and maintain our website and mobile app. You’ll be responsible for developing both front-end and back-end functionality that ensures a seamless user experience. This is a great opportunity to apply your technical skills in a meaningful, mission-driven environment.

    • Build APIs and ensure smooth front-end and back-end integration
    • Manage databases and optimize application performance
    • Implement secure and scalable features across all platforms
    • Collaborate with the content, design, and technical teams to align on functionality and aesthetics
    • Conduct testing, debugging, and continuous improvement for website and app systems
    • Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by identifying and resolving technical bottlenecks

    Qualifications

    • Proficiency with JavaScript (React/Angular/Vue) and Node.js or Python
    • Strong understanding of databases (MySQL, MongoDB, or Firebase)
    • Experience with RESTful APIs and Git/GitHub version control
    • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
    • Degree in Computer Science, IT, or equivalent practical experience
    • Familiarity with mobile frameworks (React Native or Flutter) a plus
    • Experience in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) preferred

    Commitment

    • Volunteer technical role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote-first with opportunities for collaboration in New York City

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on experience developing full-stack solutions for an education and mentorship nonprofit
    • Collaboration with a diverse team of developers, designers, and community advocates
    • Exposure to both front-end and back-end development in a real-world environment
    • Mentorship, professional references, and portfolio-building opportunities
    • The fulfillment of building technology that empowers youth and strengthens communities
