    About Linked Mentoring

Linked Mentoring is a nonprofit organization founded in 2019 to connect, empower, and inspire LGBTQIA+ youth. We create curated, affirming spaces where LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults can collaborate, share ideas, build community, and access mentorship and resources. Through virtual meetings, mentorship programs, workshops, events, education, and volunteer and internship opportunities, we support our members and co-create community with and for LGBTQIA+ youth and their families.

    Role Overview

Linked Mentoring is a primarily volunteer-led organization entering a critical phase of growth and sustainability. We created this role to strengthen organizational infrastructure, support long-term financial health, and help position the organization to scale responsibly.

The Director of Organizational Sustainability is a shared leadership role within our distributed leadership model and will co-lead the organization alongside the Director of Mentorship and the Director of Community Engagement. This role focuses on fundraising leadership, strategic planning, and people & culture operations, while working closely with the President and Board of Directors.

This is a volunteer role averaging 3–5 hours per week. Responsibilities are designed to be collaborative and achievable within this time frame; this role is not expected to independently carry all fundraising, operations, or administrative work. As funding grows, this role is envisioned as one that could transition into a compensated leadership position.

What Success Looks Like: A Glance at the First 6–12 Months

In the first year, the Director of Organizational Sustainability will be supported to:

    • Co-create a realistic annual fundraising plan and budget in collaboration with the leadership team and Board.
    • Manage relationships with prior and existing donors and identify 3–5 new aligned funding opportunities (foundations, individual donors, or partners).
    • Lead the development of a 2-year strategic organizational plan grounded in community input, organizational capacity, and sustainability.
    • Support the refinement of people & culture systems that are appropriate for a volunteer-led organization.
    • Help position Linked Mentoring for future paid leadership roles as funding allows.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategy & Organizational Planning

    • Collaborate with fellow Directors and key community members to create a 2-year strategic organizational plan.
    • Co-create annual organization-wide reports, including high-level fundraising metrics and budget trends, for internal and external sharing.
    • Support leadership decision-making by translating strategy into achievable operational priorities.

    Fundraising & Grants Stewardship

    • Serve as a shared leader for fundraising strategy alongside the Board and leadership team.
    • Act as a primary point of contact for existing and prospective donors and foundations, with support from other leaders and volunteers.
    • Co-create annual fundraising goals and oversee the fundraising program budget (current annual operating budget: up to $100,000, with potential for growth).
    • Support grant prospecting, relationship stewardship, and reporting; grant writing and administration may be shared with volunteers or contractors as capacity allows.

    Financial Oversight

    • Collaborate with the leadership team to develop an annual organizational budget for Board approval.
    • Maintain organized financial and fundraising records to support annual tax preparation.
    • Ensure contractors are paid in a timely manner through Bill.com.
    • Support transparent financial communication across leadership and the Board.

    People & Culture Operations

    • Co-lead the organization alongside the Director of Mentorship and Director of Community Engagement.
    • Partner with the President to lead annual all-staff meetings inclusive of long-term volunteers, staff, and working Board members.
    • Collaborate with other Directors to develop and maintain role descriptions, staff handbooks, policies, procedures, volunteer agreements, and volunteer management practices.
    • Collaborate on staff and volunteer relations, including recruitment, onboarding, transitions, and reporting processes, with attention to equity, clarity, and sustainability.
    • Manage contracts and agreements with funders, contractors, and volunteers, ensuring privacy and confidentiality.
    • Serve as a primary liaison between staff and the Board of Directors.

    Who You Are

We welcome applicants with diverse lived, professional, educational, and volunteer experiences. We do not require a specific number of years of experience. In your cover letter, please share what experiences you bring that you believe will be helpful in this role.

Helpful (but not required) experiences include:

    • Existing or developing relationships with donors, foundations, or funders aligned with youth programming, mentorship, or LGBTQIA+ communities.
    • Experience supporting or building annual operating budgets (up to $100,000, with growth potential).
    • Comfort with fundraising strategy, donor stewardship, and/or grant-related work.
    • Experience or interest in people & culture operations within nonprofit or volunteer-led organizations.
    • Excitement about supporting a young, grassroots organization during a growth phase.
    • Comfort working within a distributed leadership structure and building trust-based relationships.
    • Deep respect for the leadership, wisdom, and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults.
    • Commitment to centering Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Anti-racism in organizational decision-making.
    • Resides in the United States (required)

    Commitment to Equity

We recognize that many people, particularly individuals with marginalized or minoritized identities, may hesitate to apply for roles unless they meet every listed qualification. Research shows this disproportionately impacts BIPOC individuals, LGBTQIA+ individuals, disabled and neurodivergent individuals, and people with histories of institutionalization. If you are excited about our mission and feel aligned with much (but not all) of this role, we encourage you to apply or reach out. Linked Mentoring values growth capacity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn over “perfect” resumes.

We also recognize that unpaid roles can create barriers to participation. We aim to be transparent about expectations, flexible with capacity, respectful of boundaries, and intentional about sharing responsibility so that this role is sustainable and supportive.
