    Description

Love horses? Make this a special summer for a child with challenges!

We run two summer programs, Pony Pals and Giddy Up and Grow. Giddy Up and Grow is for therapeutic riders, primarily at risk youth. With the help of a volunteer, the participants ride and do other activities around the farm and nature trails, as well as work on reading and journaling as a part of every day. Pony Pals is integrated, having both recreational and therapuetic participants. Each rider in Pony Pals is assigned a horse and a volunteer for the whole week, learning to ride and about horse care in a fun, social, enviroment. in the afternoons they do a variety of activities & art projects, all horse related.

There are 8 one week sessions, volunteers can sign up for one week or multiple weeks - even the whole summer! Volunteers will lead the horses during lessons, help the students learn to groom and tack, and assist with afternoon activities such as giving the horses baths, doing horse related games and art projects, reading, journaling, working in the garden and more!

Volunteers MUST have experience working with horses, and be at least 14. We have orientation and training for all our volunteers, and evaluate their skill level before they work with clients. Volunteers have to pass horse handling before they can volunteer on their own in classes.

Ideally we would like to have the same volunteer with the same student for a whole week, 8:00 to 2:00, and then stay to help in the barn from 2:00 to 4:00. We are willing to discuss alternative schedules.

Reach out to our Volunteer Coordinators, Caron and Tammy, at Volunteer@windrushfarm.org for more information.
