The Guanlan Scholarship Foundation has been supporting village girls with scholarships to keep them in school through high school in a left-behind area of western China since the year 2000. Continued schooling empowers the girls to imagine broader horizons and take advantage of better living and work opportunities beyond subsistence farming, low-paid, insecure hard labor, or worse. Better educated girls can take better care of themselves and their families and are better able to resist workplace abuses. Better educated girls are more empowered.
The Foundation has an updated website and presence on Facebook and Instagram; however, it needs re-design and development, also active posting and blogging to raise interest. The Foundation is lead by its founder, Dr. Vilma Seeberg, and has an annual Scholarship enrolment at any one time of approximately 41 young village girls, many of whom are rural migrants. They are undocumented and have no access to urban social welfare or education, are treated like non-citizens, experience discrimination, poverty, and a second-class education. The Scholarship pays for the fees and tuition to graduate from high school, which propels them into a better starting position in the labor market - and gives them the confidence to seek better opportunities, including higher education.
The Foundation welcomes also volunteers who are proficient in Chinese. We welcome young volunteers who are activist and creative.

Website Volunteer – WordPress Designer & Content Manager

About the Role
We are looking for a passionate and self-driven volunteer to maintain and continue improving our WordPress website. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys blending design, content, and basic technical work — and wants to contribute meaningfully to a nonprofit that directly supports students in need. No hardcore coding required; most tasks are manageable with WordPress and AI tools.
Weekly Check-In
There will be a one-on-one virtual meeting once a week on a mutually flexible day. The meeting covers two things: a quick status update on tasks completed during the week, and a discussion of priorities and goals for the week ahead. These meetings are light, focused, and designed to keep the work aligned with the foundation's evolving needs.
What You'll Be Working On
Website Design & Structure
- Redesign and restructure website pages to improve visual clarity and ease of navigation
- Guide visitors naturally toward understanding our mission, how the foundation operates, and who we serve
- Ensure the site reflects a clean, welcoming, and trustworthy nonprofit identity
SEO & Readability
- Improve SEO scores by updating page titles, meta descriptions, heading tags, and image alt text
- Enhance content readability to make it accessible to a broad audience
- Use SEO plugins (Yoast or similar) to monitor and maintain health scores
Payment Integration & Donor Experience
- Maintain and troubleshoot Stripe and PayPal donation integrations
- Ensure the donation flow is smooth, secure, and user-friendly
- Set up or update automated thank-you emails triggered after each donation
Content & Blog Management
- Update website images with the latest, high-quality visuals that represent the foundation's work
- Write and publish regular blog posts covering scholarship updates, student stories, and impact reports
- Keep all content current, accurate, and aligned with the foundation's voice
What We're Looking For
- Comfortable working with WordPress (no coding experience needed)
- Willingness to use AI tools to assist with writing, design decisions, and SEO
- Basic understanding of SEO best practices
- Familiarity with Stripe and/or PayPal integrations, or eagerness to learn
- Strong written communication skills in English
- Self-motivated, reliable, and mission-aligned
- Availability for a brief weekly check-in call on a mutually agreed day
- Able to work as part of a team, which requires mutual respect, kindness in communication, and willingness to help each other complete tasks.
