    Description

Camp Fire Samish & Camp Kirby Board of Directors

Camp Fire Samish connects young people to the outdoors, to others, and to themselves. We have done this for over 100 years through our outdoor-based, technology-free programs at Camp Kirby. Growing up is hard, and young people today need places to unplug, to have fun, to build confidence, to be challenged, and to develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime.

Serving on the Camp Fire Samish & Camp Kirby Board of Directors is an incredible opportunity to make an impact in the lives of young people in Whatcom and Skagit counties. We serve over 2,000 young people each year, and the Board of Directors provides governance and oversight for our organization. We are looking for people with a love for youth development, the outdoors, or for improving the wellbeing of young people in our area.

The Board of Directors meets six times per year, with meeting locations alternating between Whatcom and Skagit counties. Below is a list of general responsibilities for the Camp Fire Samish Board.

    Planning

    • Set the strategic direction for the organization that aligns with our core program areas (teen service and leadership, outdoor education, and Camp Kirby camps)
    • Approve and monitor progress toward long-range goals and annual objectives that align with the strategic plan

    Financial Management

    • Evaluate, finalize, and approve the annual budget
    • Approve major expenditures outside of the budget
    • Ensure an annual compilation, review, or audit of organizational accounts
    • Ensure adequate financial resources for the organization

    Fundraising

    • Be active participant in fundraising events, especially the Annual Auction
    • Support Executive Director in fundraising efforts, either through making direct asks or by facilitating connections
    • Make your own personal donation (no minimum requirement)

    Board Development

    • Recruit new Board members
    • Review and approve additions to the Board

    Governance

    • Create all necessary Board committees
    • Conduct an annual Board review of the Board as a whole

    Personnel

    • Select a new Camp Fire Executive Director when necessary
    • Provide the Executive staff with an annual evaluation based on the progress made toward achieving the strategic plan, long-range goals and objectives
    • Approve the staffing structure for the organization

    Meetings

    • Attend Board meetings - the Board meets six times yearly (members must attend at least five) and meetings rotate between Whatcom and Skagit Counties
