    Description

Direct Support Volunteers play a meaningful role in improving the quality of life for hospice patients and their families. Volunteers provide presence, companionship, and comfort to individuals during a vulnerable and deeply human time of life. No medical experience is required — just kindness, reliability, and a desire to help.

As a Direct Support Volunteer, you will offer emotional support and companionship through simple but impactful activities, tailored to each patient’s needs and interests.

    Volunteer Responsibilities

    Volunteers may support patients through:

    • Friendly visits & companionship
    • Conversation, storytelling, listening, sharing memories
    • Comfort activities
    • Reading aloud, music, prayer, aromatherapy, hand massages (optional)
    • Legacy & enrichment activities
    • Life‑review projects, writing letters, scrapbooking, art or simple craft activities
    • Family & caregiver relief
    • Sitting with the patient while caregivers take a break (non‑medical presence only)
    • Engagement for facility patients
    • Playing cards or games, watching favorite shows, or simply offering a calming presence
    • Specialized talents welcome
    • Musicians, spiritual support, bilingual volunteers, veterans, and students are encouraged to apply.

    Who We’re Looking For

This role is ideal for individuals who are:

    • Compassionate, patient, and empathetic
    • Comfortable offering support in quiet or emotional settings
    • Good listeners and respectful of diverse backgrounds
    • Responsible, dependable, and able to maintain boundaries
    • Interested in meaningful service and one‑on‑one connection

Volunteers must be 18+ (or 15+ with parent/guardian approval depending on program and location).

    Training is provided and flexible.

    Training & Requirements

All volunteers receive role‑specific training and ongoing support. Requirements include:

    • TB test (provided)
    • Background check (provided)
    • Hospice volunteer training
    • Commitment to maintain confidentiality
    • Reliable transportation to patient locations

Training can be completed virtually, in person, or hybrid, depending on your schedule.

    Impact

Your presence brings peace, comfort, and emotional support to individuals and families navigating end‑of‑life care. Volunteers often become an essential part of a patient’s support team, offering moments of joy, reflection, and connection.

This is deeply meaningful work that transforms both the patient’s experience — and often the volunteer’s life as well.
