    Description

Lake Mead National Recreation Area started its Adopt-A-Spot program after a rise in visitation leading to more trash in the park. The Adopt-A-Spot program gives community groups and individuals the opportunity to adopt any area in the park while pledging to clean it at least 4 times a year. Individuals, families, non-profit organizations, interest groups, scout troops, or anyone else interested are welcome to join the program!

Spots are available all throughout the park and can be any location. Trails, picnic areas, coves, parking areas, are all available options. Volunteer duties include picking up trash such as glass, Styrofoam, plastic, etc. Volunteers should be able to lift items up to 25 lbs. and any large items can be reported to the volunteer office. The NPS can provide trash grabbers and trash bags for cleanups, if necessary. Cleanups can be scheduled any day of the week; however, adopters are responsible for informing the volunteer office staff of their cleanup. Following the cleanup, volunteers are asked to send a brief report to the volunteer office that has the amount of litter removed, volunteer hours, location, date, and any other comments.

Training is required for all adopters. If you’re interested in adopting a spot as a group, we require 2-3 designated group leaders to complete the training, but the whole group is not required. The training will cover a National Park Service and Lake Mead National Recreation Area over, program information, paperwork requirements, park policies and regulations, as well as safety protocol.
