    Description

    BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 45 countries and 25 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 25 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

    SCOPE OF WORK: Community Ambassadors will work in coordination with the Resource & Partnership Development (RPD) team in Sacramento to engage the local community through resource development, outreach, and other community engagement activities. These volunteers will leverage their passion for serving the newcomer community to strengthen the IRC’s network of donors and partners by promoting IRC programs and facilitating in-kind contributions.

    This role is distinct from all other IRC volunteer opportunities in that it can accommodate all kinds of work schedules, including those who tend to be unavailable to volunteer during the 9am-5pm work week. Not only is scheduling for this role extremely flexible, but it also allows for asynchronous work. The volunteer would be responsible for tracking and reporting their hours and communicating with the Volunteer & Donation Coordinator.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    General responsibilities could include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Be on-call to support at IRC events, such as:
      • IRC-led community events
      • New Roots Farm: Service-Learning Fridays (monthly single-day volunteer opportunity)
      • Neighbors for Newcomers Saturdays (monthly single-day volunteer opportunity)
    • Organize and support donation drives among your personal network(s);
    • Distribute flyers and promote IRC programs in the Sacramento community;
    • Airport pick-ups or other forms of transportation as needed;
    • Other potential duties as they may arise.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Regular communication with the Volunteer & Donation Coordinator via email, to confirm tasks, attendance at events, and so on;
    • Strong communication skills;
    • Energetic and positive attitude;
    • Comfort with cross-cultural communication;
    • Self-starter, who enjoys taking on tasks with relatively little formal guidance;
    • Ability to work collaboratively at events or in coordination with other volunteers, as needed.

    Standard of Professional Conduct

    The IRC and the IRC workers must adhere to the values and principles outlined in the IRC Way – our Code of Conduct. These are Integrity, Service, Accountability, and Equality.
