The I Was Here Project is transforming the way America understands its history. Through installations, educational programming, and civic partnerships, the project seeks to reshape the national narrative and create a more complete understanding of our shared history. Its vision is to create lasting national change by changing how communities see, experience, and discuss the places around them.
Position Summary
The I Was Here Project is seeking a highly organized, mission-driven volunteer to help build the fundraising infrastructure that will support the organization's national growth. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys creating systems, identifying opportunities, and helping visionary ideas become sustainable organizations.
Working closely with the Executive Director, this individual will help establish the tools, processes, and partnerships needed to expand the project's impact across the country.
This is more than a volunteer role. It is an opportunity to influence a nationally significant movement that uses the arts, history, technology and public engagement to foster understanding, civic dialogue, and cultural transformation.
Primary Responsibilities
Develop and organize donor management systems, including implementation and ongoing management of a CRM.
Research prospective foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities that align with the organization's mission and strategic priorities.
Coordinate with grant writers by tracking proposal deadlines, submissions, reporting requirements, and grant deliverables.
Build and maintain fundraising calendars, prospect lists, and grant tracking systems.
Work with the Executive Director to identify local, regional, and national opportunities that increase visibility, build partnerships, and elevate the profile of the project.
Research conferences, exhibitions, speaking engagements, and collaborative opportunities that position the I Was Here Project before new audiences and funders.
Assist in organizing fundraising materials and maintaining development records to support long-term growth.
Ideal Qualifications
We're looking for someone who:
Is passionate about history, arts and culture, social impact, or nonprofit leadership.
Enjoys creating systems and improving organizational effectiveness.
Has strong research, project management, and organizational skills.
Is comfortable working independently while collaborating with a small, entrepreneurial team.
Has experience with fundraising, nonprofit development, grants, CRM systems, communications, or project management (preferred but not required).
