    Volunteer Position: Historic Preservation & Mechanical Crew Member

    Volunteer Position: Historic Preservation & Mechanical Crew Member - The Louisiana Steam Train Association is seeking volunteers to assist with the preservation, repair, and restoration of historic railroad equipment. This includes steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, other rolling stock, and any other historic machinery.

    Volunteer Opportunities - Crew members will have the opportunity to participate in:

    • Electrical work
    • Diesel locomotive maintenance
    • Steam locomotive maintenance
    • Motorcar and other mechanical maintenance
    • Railcar repair and restoration
    • Pipefitting and plumbing
    • Welding and metal fabrication
    • Cleaning, painting, and general preservation work
    • Tool and work-area organization

    Experience and Training - No previous railroad or mechanical experience is required. Volunteers will work alongside experienced crew members and receive hands-on instruction appropriate to each task. This is an opportunity to learn new skills, gain practical experience, and help preserve Louisiana’s railroad history. Individuals with professional trade (mechanical, industrial, automotive, marine, agricultural, military maintenance experience, etc.) are also encouraged to volunteer and share their knowledge. All work will be performed under crew supervision and in accordance with applicable safety procedures. Volunteers must be willing to follow instructions, use proper personal protective equipment, and work cooperatively as part of a team.

    Schedule and Location - Volunteer work is generally performed on scheduled workdays at LASTA facilities in the New Orleans and Garyville areas. Participation may be based on individual availability and current project needs. Come out, meet the crew, learn a new skill, and help preserve historic railroad equipment for future generations!
