Great For: Students, retirees, bilingual volunteers, healthcare career seekers, pet therapy teams, veterans, and compassionate community members

At Maxcare Hospice, our volunteers help bring comfort, dignity, and human connection to patients and families during one of life’s most meaningful stages. Hospice volunteering is not about medical care. It is about presence, kindness, listening, and helping someone feel less alone.

We are looking for compassionate volunteers throughout Orange County who want to make a real difference through friendly visits, emotional support, simple activities, and companionship.

How You Can Make a Difference

Hospice volunteers may support patients and families by:

    • Visiting patients at home, in assisted living, or in skilled nursing facilities
    • Offering companionship, conversation, and a calm presence
    • Reading, playing music, writing letters, or doing simple activities
    • Providing caregiver relief while a family member takes a short break
    • Helping with small errands or non-medical support when appropriate
    • Making check-in phone calls to patients or families
    • Supporting special projects, cards, legacy activities, or office tasks
    • Sharing special skills such as music, art, prayer support, hair styling, nail care, or pet therapy

Even one hour a week can bring comfort to someone who needs it.

    We Especially Welcome

    We are currently looking for:

    • Vietnamese-speaking and bilingual volunteers
    • Volunteers comfortable visiting patients in Orange County
    • Pre-med, nursing, psychology, public health, social work, and healthcare administration students
    • Retirees and adults who want meaningful community service
    • Certified pet therapy teams
    • Veterans interested in supporting fellow veterans
    • Volunteers with music, art, writing, spiritual care, or companionship skills

    What We Provide

    • Free hospice volunteer orientation and training
    • Provided TB test and background check
    • Ongoing support from our volunteer coordinator
    • Flexible scheduling based on your availability
    • Meaningful patient and family connection
    • Documentation of volunteer hours when needed for school or community service
    • A supportive team that values your time, compassion, and heart

    Requirements

To protect patients and families, volunteers must be able to:

    • Complete hospice volunteer orientation
    • Pass a background check
    • Complete required health screening/TB clearance if applicable
    • Have reliable transportation for in-person visits
    • Follow confidentiality and patient privacy guidelines
    • Be dependable, compassionate, and respectful of different cultures, beliefs, and family situations

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old for direct patient visits. Some administrative or special project opportunities may be available for younger volunteers with guardian consent, depending on agency policy.

    Why Hospice Volunteering Matters

Many hospice patients simply want someone to sit with them, listen to their stories, hold their hand, play music, pray with them, or bring a moment of peace into their day. Families also feel supported knowing that their loved one is surrounded by care.

Hospice volunteers are an important part of the care team and help preserve the heart of hospice: comfort, dignity, and connection.
