    Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, educational enrichment, and creative opportunity.

    PromiseShield is MAP’s division responsible for cybersecurity, privacy, safeguarding, digital governance, and organizational protection.

    Role Overview

    Mentor A Promise is seeking a strategic, collaborative, and mission-centered Chief Security Officer (CSO) to help lead MAP’s cybersecurity, digital protection, and institutional security governance efforts.

    The Chief Security Officer serves as MAP’s senior volunteer leader responsible for:

    • Cybersecurity strategy
    • Security planning
    • Digital risk management
    • Infrastructure protection
    • Security operations
    • Access protection
    • Incident preparedness
    • Institutional resilience

    This executive leadership role works collaboratively across technology, legal, operations, and executive leadership teams to help ensure MAP grows responsibly and securely.

    The CSO helps build a culture where security is not simply technical—but mission-centered, proactive, and rooted in trust.

    This is an executive cybersecurity and security governance role focused on protection, preparedness, and long-term resilience.

    Core Responsibilities

    Cybersecurity Strategy & Governance

    • Develop and lead MAP’s cybersecurity and digital protection strategy
    • Establish security policies, protocols, and organizational best practices
    • Support long-term security planning and governance systems
    • Strengthen institutional preparedness and operational resilience

    Security Operations & Access Protection

    Oversee and support:

    • Account security
    • Access controls
    • Authentication systems
    • Identity protection
    • Permission structures
    • Platform and infrastructure security

    Help ensure MAP’s technology environments remain secure and responsibly managed.

    Google Workspace & Platform Security

    Collaborate with technology leadership to support:

    • Google Workspace security administration
    • Authentication and access protections
    • Secure communication systems
    • Administrative security controls
    • Organizational platform governance

    Help strengthen the security and reliability of MAP’s collaboration and operational systems.

    Cybersecurity Education & Awareness

    Lead and support:

    • Cybersecurity awareness initiatives
    • Phishing prevention education
    • Security training and guidance
    • Secure communication practices
    • Workforce and volunteer cyber awareness

    Promote a culture of digital responsibility and shared protection.

    Risk Management & Incident Preparedness

    • Monitor and assess digital vulnerabilities and operational risks
    • Support cybersecurity threat awareness and preparedness
    • Lead incident preparedness and response planning
    • Coordinate escalation and response procedures when needed
    • Help ensure MAP can respond thoughtfully and responsibly to evolving risks

    Cross-Functional Security Leadership

    Collaborate with:

    • PromiseShield Privacy Team
    • PromiseStack (Product & Technology)
    • Legal & Governance Leadership
    • PromisePeople (HR & Volunteer Operations)
    • Operations & Executive Leadership

    Support secure technology adoption, responsible infrastructure growth, and mission-aligned protection systems.

    Qualifications

    Commitment

    Volunteer executive leadership role

    Approximately 5–10 hours per week

    Minimum 6-month commitment required

    Remote / hybrid collaboration

    US-based volunteers only

    Responsive communication through MAP systems

    48-hour communication expectation

    Participation in MAP onboarding, safeguarding, and organizational orientation processes
