    Description

Milford PA Volunteer to Host a Foreign Exchange Student

Hosting a high school international exchange student can be a rewarding experience for families or individuals for several reasons:

    Cultural Exchange

    • Broaden Perspectives: Families can gain insights into different cultures, traditions, and lifestyles.
    • Language Skills: Hosting an exchange student provides an opportunity to practice and improve language skills, both for the host and the student.

    Personal Growth

    • Building Relationships: Creating lasting friendships with someone from another country can enrich personal and family life.
    • Empathy and Understanding: Exposure to different backgrounds fosters empathy and a deeper understanding of global issues.

    Educational Benefits

    • Learning Opportunities: Families can learn about the student’s culture, traditions, and history, enhancing their own education.
    • Support for Student’s Education: Helping a student navigate a new educational system can be fulfilling and rewarding.

    Family Dynamics

    • Strengthening Family Bonds: The experience can bring families together as they share the journey of hosting.
    • Role Modeling: Parents can teach their children about kindness, hospitality, and global citizenship.

    Community Involvement

    • Engagement: Hosting fosters a sense of community and encourages involvement in local events and activities.
    • Diversity: Promoting diversity within the household can enrich community interactions and understanding.

    Adventure and Fun

    • New Experiences: Families can enjoy new activities, cuisines, and customs introduced by the exchange student.
    • Travel Opportunities: Hosts may have the chance to explore new places with their guest or even travel abroad to visit them later.

    Personal Fulfillment

    • Giving Back: Many hosts feel a sense of fulfillment in providing a supportive environment for a student far from home.
    • Creating Memories: The experience often leads to cherished memories and stories that families will treasure for years.

    Financial Considerations

    • Financial Support: Some programs provide stipends or assistance to help offset hosting costs, making it a more feasible option for some families.

In summary, the motivation to host an international exchange student can stem from a desire for cultural exchange, personal growth, educational benefits, family bonding, community engagement, adventure, and personal fulfillment.

Choose from these ways to host; short-term (3 months) as a Welcome Family, for a Semester, or school Year. You don't have to have your own child in high school to host. You may be a Couple, with or without children, Single, Empty-nester or Grandparents. Many different family dynamics make for great hosts.

And yes, you get to pick the student(s) you wish to host by reviewing our student profiles. Our exchange students, ages 15-18, have worked hard to be accepted into our program and are waiting now to be selected by their US host family.

This year's NWSE exchange students come from Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and more! They arrive with English fluency, travel medical insurance and their own spending money. We ask our hosts to provide a loving, caring environment, 3 meals per day and a bedroom, which can be shared with a host sibling of the same gender 12 and up. Students attend the high school your home is zoned for.
