Make a Difference This Summer: Become a Hospice Volunteer
Are you looking for a meaningful way to spend your summer (and maybe beyond)? Join our team as a Hospice Volunteer. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain clinical exposure, develop high-level communication skills, and provide essential support to patients and families facing end-of-life journeys.
By starting your training now, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running for the Spring and Summer terms.
### Why This Role is Perfect for Students
- Clinical Exposure: Gain firsthand experience in a healthcare setting or private home, perfect for Pre-Med, Nursing, Psychology, or Social Work majors.
- Flexible Scheduling: We work around your class schedule and summer plans.
- Resume Building: Demonstrate empathy, reliability, and emotional maturity to future employers or grad school admissions boards.
- Impact: Move beyond the classroom and make a tangible difference in someone’s quality of life.
### Key Responsibilities
As a volunteer, you aren't just an observer; you are a vital part of the interdisciplinary care team. Your role may include:
- Companionship: Visiting patients in their homes or care facilities to read, listen to music, play cards, or simply offer a supportive presence.
- Legacy Work: Helping patients record memories, write letters to loved ones, or create "Life Review" scrapbooks.
- Respite Support: Providing a few hours of relief for family caregivers so they can run errands or rest.
- Administrative Support: Assisting our office team with special projects (great for those interested in healthcare administration).
### Requirements & Training
We provide comprehensive training that covers the philosophy of hospice, communication techniques, and the grief process.
- Training Timeline: Must complete a 12-hour orientation/training program.
- Commitment: A minimum of 1-2 hours per week.
- Vetting: Must pass a background check/drug screen and TB test.
- Qualities: We are looking for students who are dependable, empathetic, and comfortable with various patient care settings.
