    Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, and community. Through storytelling and publishing, MAP uplifts voices, preserves lived experiences, and creates pathways for dignity, reflection, and imagination.

    About PromisePress | Publishing, Editorial & Storytelling

    PromisePress is MAP’s publishing and editorial division. Through blogs, articles, essays, and long-form storytelling, PromisePress helps communities, educators, and families engage with narratives that center care, representation, and truth.

    Role Overview

    We are seeking Writing Editors to support the development, refinement, and publication of written content across MAP platforms.

    This role is ideal for individuals who value clarity, voice, and storytelling integrity. Editors will work closely with writers to ensure content is thoughtful, accessible, and aligned with MAP’s dignity-centered standards.

    Key Responsibilities

    Editorial Review & Content Development

    • Edit and refine blog posts, articles, essays, and written materials
    • Ensure clarity, structure, tone, and readability across content
    • Provide constructive, respectful feedback to writers

    Voice, Tone & Quality Assurance

    • Ensure all content aligns with MAP’s voice and storytelling standards
    • Maintain consistency across editorial outputs
    • Support writers in strengthening narrative flow and impact

    Content Alignment & Sensitivity

    • Review content for cultural sensitivity, accessibility, and trauma-informed language
    • Ensure content reflects dignity-centered and community-informed perspectives
    • Support ethical storytelling practices

    Publishing & Workflow Support

    • Collaborate with editorial and content teams on deadlines and publication timelines
    • Support formatting and preparation of content for publication
    • Maintain organized editorial workflows and document tracking

    Cross-Team Collaboration

    • Work with communications and creative teams to align written content with broader storytelling initiatives
    • Support magazine, blog, and campaign content development
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
    • Attention to detail and ability to improve clarity and structure
    • Ability to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred

    • Experience in editing, publishing, journalism, or content development
    • Familiarity with storytelling, blogging, or editorial workflows
    • Interest in education, social impact, or community-based narratives
    • Experience with style guides (APA, Chicago, etc.)

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
