About AFK Cafe

AFK Cafe is a volunteer-driven online community dedicated to creating spaces where people can connect, belong, and participate without pressure.

Through gaming, tabletop roleplaying, movie nights, creative projects, educational experiences, social events, mentorship, and community programming, we aim to combat isolation and help adults build meaningful social connections in an increasingly disconnected world.

AFK Cafe is built on the belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute.

Our contributors come from diverse backgrounds, professions, hobbies, and life experiences. Some are students exploring new skills. Some are professionals looking to give back. Others are creators, gamers, storytellers, organizers, educators, technologists, artists, and community builders.

Rather than relying on a single expert or leader, we believe in creating opportunities for people to learn from one another.

Whether someone wants to learn how to run events, facilitate communities, manage projects, build Discord systems, create content, tell stories, develop leadership skills, or simply become more connected and confident, there is often someone within the community willing to share their knowledge and experience.

AFK Cafe was founded by a doctoral-level mental health professional with a passion for community building, education, connection, and personal growth. While AFK Cafe is not a formal internship or educational program, contributors often gain practical experience, mentorship, leadership opportunities, portfolio-building projects, and professional development through their participation.

As the community grows, so does the collective knowledge, creativity, and experience available to everyone involved.

We are not just building events, projects, or programs.

Our Volunteer Development Program

We believe volunteering should be more than completing tasks—it should be an opportunity to learn, grow, connect, and contribute in meaningful ways.

All accepted contributors participate in a 90-Day Exploration Period designed to help both the contributor and AFK Cafe determine the best fit.

During this period, contributors may:

• Explore different projects and teams
• Learn community systems and processes
• Build new skills and experience
• Receive support and feedback
• Discover leadership opportunities
• Develop a long-term contribution path if desired

Each contributor is paired with a mentor who provides guidance, answers questions, helps them navigate opportunities within the community, and supports their growth throughout onboarding. Mentors help contributors navigate the community, identify opportunities for growth, connect with others who share similar interests, and develop projects or initiatives they are passionate about.

Our goal is to create an environment where volunteers feel supported, empowered, and connected while contributing in ways that align with their strengths and interests.

Growing Together

AFK Cafe is a growing community, and like many volunteer-driven organizations, we are constantly learning, improving, and evolving.

Because we are building something meaningful together, there may be times when projects move more slowly than expected, systems are being refined, or new ideas take time to develop. Our contributors are volunteers balancing real-life responsibilities, careers, families, education, health, and personal commitments.

While we may not always move quickly, we are always moving forward.

We believe growth is a process, and we value steady progress over perfection.

Requirements

Applicants must:

• Be 21 years of age or older
• Have reliable internet access
• Have access to Discord
• Be comfortable using Discord, including channels, threads, voice chat, and direct messages
• Communicate respectfully and collaborate effectively with others

Because AFK Cafe operates primarily through Discord, most volunteer activities, onboarding, mentorship, project coordination, events, training, and community operations take place on the platform.

Applicants should be prepared to actively access and use Discord as part of their volunteer experience.

Selection Process

1. Submit your application.
2. Applications are reviewed by AFK Cafe leadership.
3. Selected applicants may be invited to continue onboarding.
4. Contributors are matched with opportunities based on interests, skills, and availability.
5. Contributors are assigned a mentor when appropriate.
6. Accepted contributors begin their 90-Day Exploration Period.

Applications that do not follow instructions, provide incomplete information, or fail to complete required steps will not be considered.
