Communications Publications Design Specialist
Working under the direction of the Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Publications Design Specialist will be responsible for designing and producing an extensive variety of print materials, web-based communications, and promotional items for the College. Projects include brochures, reports, invitations, flyers, programs, catalogs, banners, photo displays, business cards, stationery, posters, job postings, journal ads, and other materials.
S/he is also responsible for ensuring that that College’s brand and design standards are met on these projects; taking and editing photos as needed; making recommendations for the type and weight of paper to be used; creating specifications required to secure printing bids through the College’s Purchasing Office; assisting in other aspects of the bid process, as may be needed; and serving as departmental liaison with the College’s Print Shop. S/he will oversee production activities, including review of blueprints and matchprints and management of press checks on major projects. Position also will serve as liaison with the College’s Multimedia Center on requests for photography and video services.
Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in art, design, or related field) and a minimum of four years of experience required, with a wide-ranging portfolio of work. Strong knowledge of typography as well as applications including Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop (Mac platform). Knowledge of web-based design, including work with html templates. Proven ability to work on multiple tasks under tight deadlines and to work both independently and as part of a creative team in a collegial atmosphere. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including proofreading, grammatical usage, and spelling. Knowledge of photography and videography a plus.
The ability to communicate in writing is an important job-related competency. All candidates will draft a writing sample as part of the interview process to demonstrate their ability to write memos and letters that are grammatically correct and express information clearly.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Provides design and production expertise for College publications, written materials, and multi-media communications.
- Works with department and other College administrators to assess departmental publication needs and determine appropriate production and design elements
- Participates in planning communications messages, graphic elements, and formats appropriate to client requirements
- Manages production schedules and budgets, coordinating production activities with internal and external personnel
- Plans and implements on-line and multimedia communications, coordinating with Information Technology professionals as needed
- Supervises staff both creative and production staff; works with College print shop, computer center, and other departments to ensure support of college publication needs
- May oversee equipment inventories and coordinate maintenance of specialized equipment and technology
- Develops production workflows, policies and standards, and assures adherence to any internal or external communications standards
- Performs related duties as assigned.
