Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority, State of Hawaiʻi
About Us
The Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority (MKSOA) is a State of Hawaiʻi entity established in 2022 to provide oversight and direction for the long-term management of Mauna Kea.
The Authority is responsible for guiding a multi-year transition of management responsibilities from the University of Hawaiʻi, with full transfer scheduled by June 30, 2028. This effort requires coordination across state agencies, the UH, cultural practitioners, the scientific community, and the broader public.
MKSOA’s role is to establish a clear and consistent framework for decision-making, grounded in transparency and accountability, and reflective of the cultural, environmental, and scientific significance of the mauna.
