    Description

The Animal Caregiver and Program Support position at Rancho Compasión is a challenging yet rewarding position for someone looking to make a hands-on difference in the lives of rescued farmed animals as well as support other sanctuary programs, such as tours and youth programs. This position reports to the Sanctuary Director. This job includes day-to-day sanctuary chores, administering treatments and medications to residents, assisting with special projects or events, helping lead tours or assisting in the youth programs, taking part in veterinary appointments, running errands, as well as some office and administrative tasks.

The role requires being a strong communicator, one who is trustworthy, attentive, and careful around domesticated farmed animals, resilient in the face of challenging emotional situations, capable of strenuous physical labor, and someone willing to learn, grow, and shift strategies in a rapidly growing non-profit. We seek someone who is innately compassionate and respectful towards both humans and non-humans. The person’s core values align with the organization’s mission of creating compassionate awareness of farmed animals and ending their exploitation or human consumption. Being a good team member is essential to the success of the organization, though this position requires independence and self-management at times. Problem solving and decision making are crucial skills one must be prepared for in this role.

    Requirements include:

    • Valid driver's license
    • 1+ years farm animal experience preferred
    • Able to safely lift 50+ lbs
    • Must be on-call as needed for emergencies
    • Early morning or evening hours may be required
    • Able to work on holidays and weekends
    • Occasional transport of animals to veterinary appointments, or picking up supplies
    • Basic computer and application skills

Expectations (in addition to daily chores/routine tasks):

    • Attention to detail and ability to maintain resident health maintenance schedule
      • Perform regular health checks for sanctuary residents
      • Facility with various online programs such as Airtable
    • Help manage inventory
    • Record Keeping
      • Maintain animal and volunteer records and updates
      • Scan and digitally file printed veterinary records and volunteer sheets
    • Assist in training new volunteers on orientation/training days and supervise new volunteers during shifts
    • Report in-writing at the end of each week with updates, observations, and progress notes.
    • Other tasks may include: helping lead visitor tours, participating in kids' camps and field trips, supporting various sanctuary events, or working in the education garden
