    Deputy Director Position

    Land Together (LT) is seeking a full-time Deputy Director. Our ideal candidate is a seasoned nonprofit leader with experience in complex, multi-site environments; a systems thinker who can translate strategy into action; and a relational leader skilled at cultivating trust, developing people, and stewarding organizational change.

    Who We Are

    Founded in 2002, Land Together is one of the only organizations in the country working at the intersection of environmental justice and criminal justice system reform. Through in-prison and reentry programs and services, coalition-building, and advocacy initiatives, LT brings people together to cultivate justice and belonging by nurturing deep connections to nature, self, and community for people impacted by mass incarceration.

    Position Overview

    The Deputy Director is a core member of the Executive Leadership Team and the Executive Director’s primary thought partner in guiding organizational strategy through shared decision-making. They will work closely with a seasoned leadership team and are supported by finance and operations staff.

    The Deputy Director provides strategic oversight across departments, drives cross-team alignment, and supports a values-rooted organizational culture grounded in equity, healing, accountability, and collaboration. This role holds significant responsibility for translating vision into systems, structures, and practices that support staff effectiveness and organizational sustainability.

    Responsibilities

    Strategic Planning & Organizational Leadership

    • Inform multi-year and annual planning of goals, budgets, staffing plans, and performance metrics.
    • Strengthen organizational structures and workflows to support sustainability and growth
    • Partner with the ED, leadership team, staff, and Board to cultivate strong internal alignment and strategic external relationships.
    • Lead cross-department initiatives and special projects that advance organizational priorities and program quality.

    Operations, People & Culture

    • Supervise and support the Operations Manager
    • Oversee and improve internal systems, policies, and communication processes.
    • Provide oversight of budgeting and financial monitoring in partnership with the ED and finance.
    • Model and uphold Land Together’s ecological, equity-centered, and healing-centered values.
    • Lead thoughtful, transparent, and people-centered change management efforts.

    Program Direction, Quality, & Impact

    • Supervise and support two Regional Leads and the Director of Reentry Programs
    • Guide program planning, evaluation, and continuous improvement to ensure quality, consistency, and accountability.
    • Partner with staff to design and adapt program models, curriculum, and strategic expansions.
    • Ensure compliance with funder requirements, government contracts, and CDCR policies.
    • Support staff development to strengthen facilitation, subject matter expertise, and cross-site alignment.
    • Foster communication channels across prison and reentry teams to support shared learning.
    • Support effective grant management, reporting, evaluation, and data documentation.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • 5+ years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit operations or program management, or equivalent lived and community-based leadership experience.
    • Strong people management and systems-building skills.
    • Ability to align day-to-day work with long-term organizational goals and values.
    • Financial literacy and experience with budget development and monitoring.
    • Deep alignment with Land Together’s mission, values, and healing-centered approach.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience within prison education, reentry, restorative justice, environmental justice, or healing-centered program environments.
    • Experience managing government contracts and compliance requirements.
    • Lived experience of incarceration or justice involvement is strongly encouraged and welcomed.

    Location: This position is based in California and follows a hybrid work model, combining 80% remote work with 20% travel to meetings, conferences, and program sites.

    Work is typically performed in a combination of home office, community-based, and institutional settings. The role requires flexibility to adapt to both structured office work and dynamic field environments. Occasional evening and weekend hours, as well as travel within California, are required.
